FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS LDI - 0169) 15 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

EDUCATION: Primary School (6 yrs)


2. ASSESSMENT:
PW deserted 26 Jun 50. Due to his short military service, tactical information was limited, and not considered reliable. No further interrogation recommended.

3. ORGANIZATION, STRENETH & DISPOSITION:
A. OWIN UNIT
1. PW inducted 2 Apr 50 at CHASAN MYON. Arrived CHORWON (CT4334) 6 Apr 50 by train. Upon arrival, he was sent to the training camp (Over 1000 men) at CHORWON and received about one month basic infantry training without rifle. O/a 5 May 50 PW and about 500 men were assigned to the various units of the 383rd Regt, 3rd Div at CHORWON. He and about 50 mon were assigned to the 7th Co, 3rd Bn, 383rd Regt. He was promoted to Jr Sgt during basic o/a 20 May 50, and became Asst Plat Ldr of the 3rd Platoon of the 7th Co. All men of this Regt received Russ M1891/30 rifles o/a 6 May 50 and received combat infantry training during the period. After completing training his company was ordered to report to POKKE which was one station South of P’YONGYANG. Arriving by train o/a 20 Jun 50. His company was engaged in putting cape on artillery shells (type unk) which were unloaded from freight cars and after being crated were loaded back on them. Company was located near this RR Sta.
On 25 Jun 50 his company was ordered to report to their regiment at CHORWON, arriving on the same day. The following morning the company of about 150 men, armed, was ordered to cross the parallel and head for SEOUL on foot. They arrived at TONG DU CHON NI (CS2999) where PW deserted and went to his aunts home in vic SANGWON o/a 10 July. He remained until 15 Oct 50 when he left and returned to his home 18 Oct 50. On 12 Nov 50 while et home, all former NKA soldiers were told to report to the Home Security Forces, whereby he surrendered to UN Forces.
PW stated that the strength of the 383rd Regt was approximately 2000 men. Regt was composed of 3 Inf Bn’s, Trans Co, Sig Co, Med Co and Supply Co. Each Bn was composed of 3 Inf Co’s, 45mm Gun Co, HMG Co (4 MAXIM 1910), Mortar Co (about 4 × 120mm M1938), Sig Plat and a Mess Sq (10 men). Each Co consisted of 3 Plats. Each Plat had 3 Sqds, and there was one LMG per Squad.

4. ENEMY SUPPLY & EQUIPMENT:
A. SUPPLY
1. Food consist od of rice, beans, oil, and vegetables. Food was confiscated from villagers during their advance.
2. Each rifleman was issued 150 rds. s/a ammo before crossing the 38th. PW was engaged in putting caps on artillery shells (Type unk) during the period 20 Jun 50 to 25 Jun 50. He heard that these shells were shipped from CHONGJIN. During that time PWs Co unloaded two freight cars of shells and after crating loaded them back. Destination unknown.

B. EQUIPMENT
PW stated that all men of the 383rd Regt were issued Russ (M1891/30) Rifles. All officers carried Pistols (NAGANT M1895). Each Mortar Co of Bns equipped with 4-120mm (M1938), Each HMG Co equipped with 3 AT (M1937). Each Sq had 1 LMG.
383rd Regt and each Bn Hq had Russ-make Field Phones (Type unk).
O/a 20 Apr 50 PW observed about 15 tanks during training at CHCRWON. (T 34/85)
Transportation Co of the 383rd Regt had about 20 Russian trucks (Type unk)

5. PERSONALITIES:
Former 3rd Bn Comdr of 383: HO Ung Yon, Major, about 40.
7th Company Comdr of 383: CHON Ung O, Sr Lt, about 25.
3rd Platoon Ldr of 7th Co : SHIN Tae Lok, Jr Lt, about 24.

6. MORALE:
PW stated morale of the 7th Co under 383rd Regt was low due to shortage of food and fatigue from forced marches.

7. PROPAGANDA:
PW was always told by their Co Comdr that they would win the war with support from RUSSIA. He also constantly told them that if they were captured by UN forces, they would be tortured and killed.
