FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS LDI - 0167) 14 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and information seems reliable although unable to give detailed information due to the short period of service in the CCF. Detailed interrogation of subject may bring further results as to details. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. ORGANIZATION, STRENGTH & DISPOSITION:
A. OWN UNIT:
1. PW was inducted on 23 Sep 50 at CHORYON, YOSO SONG, MANCHURIA (遼西香鉄嶺) into the replacement Bn, 38th Army. There he was ordered to go to a Chinese Language Class. After attending the class 20 days, PW was assigned to the Reconnaissance Section, 334th Regt, 112 Div, 38th Army, 4th Field Army, as an interpreter, with the rank of Asst Plat Ldr. 23 Odt the 112th and 113th Div of the 38th Army departed by train from CHORYON for NORTH KOREA with 12,000 men per divisions. Arrived at MANP’OJIN 25 Oct 50. Departed the evening of 25 Oct and arrived KANGGYE (BA9837) 260500 Oct. From there the two Divs marched down to HUICHON (BV6749) o/a 31 Oct but unit was subjected to enemy air attack and 30 out of 50 trucks were destroyed with minor losses to personnel. These trucks were loaded with ammo, weapons and food. Consequently all marches thereafter were conducted at night only. The 113th Div separated from the 112th Div o/a 1 Nov in vic HUICHON and they advanced toward KAECHON. The 112th Div arrived at KUJANG DONS (BV4516) o/a 3 Nov 50. There the 334th Regt made first contact with approximately 80 ROK troops 3 kms 8 of KUJANG DONG on 4 Nov. He was told later that the initial contact with the enemy ended in complete victory for the unit. They then made rapid advance, pursuing the enemy to Vic SANYANG CHI (上陽地).
On 10 Nov PW and 15 others were dispatched from the recon section to check on mountain trails and the enemy situation.
PW stated that the 4th Field Army was locatod at MUKDEN was composed of the 38th, 39th and 40th Army.
The 38th Army (36,000 men) was composed of 112th, 113th and 114th Divs. 112th (12,000 men) composed of the 334th, 335th, 336th and 112th Arty Regt. 113th (12,000 men) composed of the 337th, 338th, 339th and 113th Arty Regt.
38th Army and 114th Div left CHORYON for N KOREA in the latter part of Oct. PW believes that they are stationed vic MANP’OJIN at present. As of 9 Nov the 112th Div Hq located vic KUJANG DONG and 334th Regt located at SANYANCHI,
O/a 7 Nov 50 subject heard from officer that the 335th and 336th Regt of the 112th Div were sent to vic of KAECHON for purpose of supporting the 337th and 338th Regt of the 113th Div engaged in a battle at that time.

B. OTHER UNIT:
PW stated that on 10 Oct prior to departure of 112th and 113th Div from CHORYON he heard from an officer of the 38th Army that all units of the 4th Field Army will cross into N KOREA.

4. MISSION:
PW stated that present mission (as of 10 Nov) for the 112th and 113th Div’s is to occupy KAECHON by 15 Nov 50.

5. ENEMY SUPPLY & EQUIPMENT:
The 334th Regt has 12 Mountain Artillery pieces (Size unk) which are disassembled and carried by horses, 75mm Mt Pack Howitzers, Mortars (Size unk) HMGs, LMGs, Carbines and former Jap rifles. Does not know number of weapons in Regt. He stated that all US weapons used by CCF are captured weapons of the Chinese Nationalist Army.
The ammo is insufficient. Each rifleman carries an average of 150 rds.
Food is also insufficient. Troops are fed an average two rice balls per day however amount is not enough.
All troops were issued a set of winter clothing prior to crossing the border into Korea.

6. REPLACEMENTS
PW has no knowledge of any replacement of personnel or materiel.

7. MISCELLANEOUS
A. PERSONALITIES:
38th Army CG: LIN. Piao (林彪), age 53.
PW states that all officers are referred to by numbers.
334th Regt CO - #35.

B. ENEMY TACTICS
PW stated that he has no knowledge of any N Korean units fighting on the front lines. All NK units were relieved by CCF units. PW heard that all NKA troops were retreating as far north as MANP’OJIN to reorganize and reequip.

C. FOREIGN ELEMENTS:
PW observed approx 150 former Japanese KWANGTUNG ARMY men in the 38th Army as line soldiers, however, they were left in CHORYON and did not participate in the Korean War. He also stated that there were one or two interpreters (Korean) with each company, who were brought over from CHORYON.
