FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS LDI - 0155) 10 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: CHE, Yong Jun (雀永順)

CIVIL OCCUPATION: Bank Employee
EDUCATION: Primary School 6 years


2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative during interrogation and his information is considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. OWN UNIT:
PW was inducted 27 Jul 50 at SUNCHON and was sent to P’YONGYANG to attend the Supply Training School. O/a 18 Aug 50, he was ordered to report to the People’s Welfare Department, Supply Section. PW was assigned to the 26th Brig which was being activated at NAMCHON. Upon receiving the order, PW and seven others departed by truck and arrived there that night. There he was assigned to the 1st HMG Bn of the 26th Brig, which consisted of 4 HMG Bn’s, 2 Inf Bn’s and a 76mm Gun Bn. The normal strength of the HMG Bn was 700 men, however, the actual strength then was only 500 men. PW’s primary job was to supply food and clothing for the Bn, which he obtained from the Brig Sup Sec. O/a 18 Sep 50, the entire 26th Brig was withdrawn to YINCH’ON, minus his Bn which was assigned to CHORWON. However, being a supply officer, he left NAMCH’ON on a later date. After loading all necessary equipment, he left with one truck arriving in the vicinity of CHORWON o/a 22 Sep 50. Upon his arrival the unit was bombed by enemy planes, scattering the unit personnel. PW started retreating north, passing through KUMWHA, P’YONGGANG, ICHON, KUKSAN, YANGDOK and UNSAN. Upon arriving at UNSAN he was stopped by NKA soldiers and was given a SMG and told to go to MANP’OJIN. On 22 Oct, at CHASAN-MYON, INPUNG-NI, he surrendered to ROK Security Unit, but was told to return home. Then on 27 Oct he surrendered to the SUNCHON Home Guard because he was told that it would be better for him for he was still considered a soldier.

4. ENEMY SUPPLY AND EQUIPMENT:
Food consisted of rice and pickles gathered from farmers.
PW heard from others that the Brig received two truck loads of weapons but he himself never saw them.

5. ENEMY LOSSES:
O/a 6 Oct 50, PW’s Bn lost all its equipment in an air attack.

7. MISCELLANEOUS:
While at NAMCH’ON, PW’s unit used regular phone for communication, However, after getting back to NORTH KOREA, all communication was by runners. During their retreat all travel was on foot over mountain trails, for they were fearful of detection if they travelled on roads. During retreat all men were told to retreat to MANP’OJIN for Russian planes were preparing for combat.
PW stated that those who have been in the service long were high spirited but those who were conscripted after hostilities began had no will to fight.
During the latter part of Jul, PW heard that there were a great many US prisoners in P’YONGYANG.
