FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS LDI - 0143) 8 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: CHONG, Pong Chun (郑鳳春)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative during interrogation and the information obtained appears fairly reliable. He is, however, not recommended for further interrogation.

3. OWN ORGANIZATION:
PW was inducted and commissioned a Jr Lt at HERYONG Jul 50 and sent to P’YONGYANG where he and 350 men entrained for SEOUL arriving there 18 Jul 50. After spending 3 days there, PW and 3 other officers were ordered to report to the 9th Bn, 105th Security Regt in KURYE (CP-6196). They departed SEOUL on foot and arrived in KURYE around 7 Aug 50 via SUWON, P’YONGTAEK, CHONAN, KONGJU, NONSAN, CHONJU, IMSIL, NAMWON. Upon arrival he was assigned to the Bn Sup Sec. Primary job was to get food from the local township for the 9th Bn. The daily ration was for 800 men with 7 grams of rice per man a day. If meat was rationed 500 grams of meat were given each man per week, o/a 18 Sep 50, the 9th Bn Hq moved to KWANGYONG (CP-7271). 28 Sep 50, the Bn received orders from the Regt to withdraw to CHUNCHON (CS-8893). They were to await further orders at CHUNCHON PW heard. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 82mm companies (800 men) assembled and headed northward. Enroute o/a 18 Oct 50, group was attacked by UN forces in the vicinity of CHOPUNGNYONG (DR-0106) and was scattered. PW and 10 other men including the CO of the 3rd Co escaped to the vicinity of KUBYONG-SAN (CR-9836) arriving there on 24 Oct 50. The CO disliked having so many men in his group. Therefore he took 3 men who he could trust and departed from the group. They therefore spent the night in the mountains but since they were exposed to the cold and suffered from hunger, they decided to take a chance even if they would be killed in entering the village to get some food. However on the way to the village they picked up a leaflet and on 25 Oct 50, surrendered to the ROK unit.

4. PRESENT ENEMY GROUPS:
a. o/a 3 Oct 50 while enroute to CHUNCHON PW heard from a villager at SAN DONG-MYON (CQ-6010) that if they headed for CHIRI-SAN (CQ-8207) they would meet guerrilla troops there.
b. While heading north the 9th Bn had around 800 men of which almost all were armed with either rifles, SMGs, or pistols, Men with rifles had about 50 rounds and those with SMGs had one full drum each of ammunition. O/a 18 Oct 50 this group was scattered by UN force near CHUPUNGNYONG-NI (DR-0106). PW escaped with 150 men.

5. PRESENT ENEMY SUPPLY AND EQUIPMENT:
PW stated that they were all given money when they departed from KWANGYONG so that they could purchase food from villages while retreating.

6. ENEMY METHODS:
PW stated during their travel through the mountain trails they had South Korean farmers to guide them over the unknown trails. These guides were paid for by company officers. Many men in civilian clothing followed at the end of their group. They were told by them that they were with the home ministry.

8. MORALE AND PROPAGANDA:
Their morale was low for they did not have adequate weapons.

9. US PRISONERS:
PW stated o/a 18 Jul 50 he saw about 3,000 prisoners, mixture of South Koreans and US prisoners at SEOUL. They were held in the former South Korean Naval headquarters.
