Nov 50 - PW crossed the 38th parallel at a point called KITONG RI (貴屯里) at 1530 hrs with approx 100 NK government employees and other stragglers, KITONG RI is located 12 km NNE of HYON RI (県里).
Nov 50 - PW with the same group traveled by way of footpath through the mountains to a point 4 km, ENE of WONTONG RI (元通里) village and headed west towards the SOHA WONTONG RI highway. Entered SOHA that evening and was met by a 16 men detachment from the 7th Div (NKA). The NK troops took all weapons and army clothing from the refugee and issued it to regrouped soldiers. This was done at the town office. Thus PW reasoned that this was assembly and regrouping point #1 for returning NK stragglers and refugees.
Nov 50 - Followed a company. body of stragglers to HAEAN (해안) approx 8 km NNW of SOHA. HAEAN village had approx 700 farm houses. PW found this village to he No 2 assembly and regrouping point. There were 3 organized. Regts of the 7th Div quartered in the farm houses. The estimated total number of troops was 1800. Weapons were rifles, SMG’s, light machine guns, heavy machine guns, 82mm mortars, and hand grenades. PW estimated that each rifleman had 50 rounds. PW met NK government employees, headed south. PW was able to learn through conversing with them that they were going south to organize subversive elements and to contact the guerrilla force below the 38th parallel whose assembly point was in the ODAESAN (五台山) mountains, 1563m high. At same time, he was able to learn that these agents were to pick up Central Korean bank notes to supplement the money to carry out their activities at SOHA where the money was to be taken from the returning stragglers and refugees from the south. It was rumored that at SOHA the town office housed 16 sacks of Central Korean bank notes. These agents and their families were well equipped with winter clothing and food for the trip south.
Nov 50 - PW followed troops who were going to CHOUMPAN RI (占方里) approx 25 road km NNW of HEAN. On the way, PW observed that NK troops were quartered in all of the farm houses along the horse cart path that he took. PW met members of the 102nd Security Guard Regt on the way and was told that the Security Guard personnel were being regrouped and reorganized at MUNDUNG-NI (文登里) approx 16 km WNW of HEAN. In CHOUMPAN RI the PW passed two Regimental Commanders and their staff officers talking along the road. Since all of the approximately 300 houses in the village were filled with troops, he assumed that 2 Regts were quartered in the village. He was able to learn that these troops had heavy and light machine guns because when the guards were changed, short bursts of firing could be heard. 82mm mortars and SMG's were seen in some of the houses. A company of men was seen with 5 Russian bazookas. The PW saw no motor vehicles and all transportation was by oxcarts. He also learned that all of the weapons and ammo was brought from the south.
Nov 50 - PW was now trying to reach to either WONS AN or PYONGYANG via a 3m wide road to NONAM RI (魯南里). Along this route there was a small village called SACHUNG RI (泗川里). Approx 2 km from SACHUNG RI towards NONAM RI, the PW came to a point where a foot path lead into the mountains. He saw messengers, Regt Cmdrs, and staff officers entering and leaving this path and thus assumed that the 7th Inf Div CP was located in that area. That night, the PW heard troops passing through the village at 2300 up to 0330 hrs. The troops were headed north.
Nov 50 - PW followed the road to. KAMTANG (甘炭) approx 15 km WNW of NONAM RI and learned that the 9th Div was there a few days ago. A regt of the 9th Div was quartered there.
Nov 50 - 1st, 3rd, and 2nd Regts of the 7th Div overtook the PW at a point approx 12 km before reaching KUMBUYONG from NONAM RI. He continued without stopping, headed for KAPYONG (後平).
Nov 50 - PW reached KUPYONG and learned that it was the Hg of the NK II Corps. He saw a 4-star General Officer as well as high ranking NK gov‘t officials. The approx 400 homes were filled with NK officials. He learned that this was the Hqs for the agents he met on the 5th. He also was told that his Regt, the 104th, was reorganized and sent to KANGYE (江界). He was told to take the following route and get back to them. To KAYRUJU RI (加泤 州里) to KOPTON (法洞) then to KUYONGDOK (旧陽德) where approx 20,000 NK troops were located then to UNGOK (暈谷). He was instructed to ask his way to TOSONG (土城) since the area in between was unsafe. Thereafter he was to head for MYENGSAN (孟山) and then to TOKCHON (德川) and follow the highway up to KANKE. He was told that the path would be marked by logs, pieces of wood, twigs, or straw across the road or path not do be taken.
Nov 50 - PW went WNW to KAYROJU RI and learned that this was the principal regrouping and staging area for all personnel, both military and Gov’t, returning north across the 38th parallel. He saw the NAMHAE Brigade moving south at this village. He learned from a messenger whom he asked for road directions that the 7th Div Hq was now located at KOKSAN (谷山).
NOV 50 - PW passed through POPTONG (法洞). Troops were stationed in the village and saw the 14th Regts S-4 drawing food rations at the town office.
Nov 50 - PW went to HASU RI (하서리). Approx 8 km before reaching HASU RI, he saw the forward elements of the troops occupy MAJUN RI (馬轉里). The troops he met told him that they were a recon patrol from KUYONGDOK and that the area was safe. Also that approx 20,000 troops were preparing for a battle in KUYONGDOK.
Nov 50 - He observed a Co of fully equipped riflemen in the mountains which divide HWANGHAEDO and PYONGAN NANDO approx 5 km from KUYONGDOK. They told him they came from a village approx 3 km from YONG SAN RI (竜山里) and located below the SOLSAN (松山) mountains.
Nov 50 - Headed for LUK CHONG and was captured.
Nov 50 - Captured.
