ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 2490　4 December 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - FWD #1 - 0262)　30 November 1950

PW was intelligent and cooperative. However, information was general and reliability only fair.

Claims to be Anti-red because he had it rough after returning to KOREA form JAPAN where he was in the Jap Army.

15 Jul 1950: Inducted into NKA and sent to P'YONGYANG where he was assigned to the peoples Army Newspaper (人民軍新聞社), Pamphlet Section as type setter.

9 Oct 1950: PW was transferred to Newspaper section and became Jr Lt in charge of the paper warehouse.

19 Oct 1950: Captured.

Peoples Army Newspaper Section (人民軍新聞社). Directly under the Culture Section of Secretary of Defense. Composed of Newspaper publishing Section and Pamphlet Publishing Section. The Newspaper staff excluding reporters, number about 120 men.

Chief Peoples Army Newspaper Section as of Sept 1950 - CHONG, Tae Song (정대성), Sr Col, age - 32. Said to be from RUSSIA and would often berate his underlings in Russian. Probably in KANGHYE.

Former (until Sep 50) Chief Peoples Army Newspaper Section - KI, Chang (민기창), Sr Col age - 45. Said to have taken over a tank unit. Believed to have been a Russian soldier.

Unit Finance Officer - KIM, Tong Jin (김동린), Sr Lt, age - unknown. New a PW in P'YONGYANG.

Published daily, consisting of four pages (regular newspaper size). An estimated 7,000 copies were published daily and were sent to the various units by army mail. Last published o/a 16 Oct 1950.

According to hearsay a reporter was sent to every unit including Independent Bns. When an article is written, the reporter must receive his unit CO's OK before sending it in. This article is sent by army mail or by the truck used by the Cultural Section. When the article reaches the editor (usually a week or so after written) it is sent to the department that is concerned with the specific topic covered, the Fighting Front, Homo Front, Political, etc. (about 15 dept) where it is censored and rewritten. This "finished" article is sent to the editor who composes the pates. The composed page is sent to the Defense Secretary censor for final OK.

O/a 16 Oct 1950 the first group moved out by truck and by 18 Oct 50, the whole staff left for KANGGYE (BA 9837). The latter group left by ox-cart as there was only one truck left. This truck took a type setting (manual) machine and the type, leaving only 6 large and small printing presses behind in a village farm home in SAM SAN-RI (三山里) (Approx YD 3927) about 16 km N of P'YONGYANG.

The paper warehouse was adjacent to the SIJONG MYON (YD 4632) MYON-office. Approx 60 rolls of paper, some Russian.

Published the Bi-monthly "propaganda handbook", a pocket-sized booklet used by the culture officers. In addition, this section printed forms and lottor-heads for general military use.

The Military Affairs Publishing Section printed solely for the General Staff Section.

For some reason the "Propaganda Handbook" was dropped in Oct and the section was disbanded.

Published twice monthly and consisted mostly of articles that appeared in the newspapers with some additional information.

A pocket-sized booklet, it usually had from 70 to 80 pages. Total number printed was 7,000 copies in Jul. An order for 15,000 copies came in for Sept but due to circumstances (air raid, etc) this figure was not reached.

The copies were usually turned over to the Cultural Section. Sometimes however, the Divisional Cultural Section came direct to get their supply.
