FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 1204) (Ref to ATIS Rpt No. 2363)　10 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: PENG, Hai-lai (彭海來) (Chinese)
RANK: Pvt (兵士)
ORGN: 38th Army, 111th Div, 335th Regt, 2d Bn

Age: 21
OCCUPATION: Grocery store (Proprietor)

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative, but information seems unreliable due to the fact that PW had no education and was unfamiliar with Korean geography. He deserted form his unit because of hunger and fear of UN air raids. PW was in good physical condition at time of interrogation. Recommend no further interrogation.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF: 38th Army, 111th Div, 335th Regt, 2d Bn Hq.
38th Army composed of 111th, 112th, 113th & 114th Inf Divisions.
111th Div composed of 335th, 336th, & 337th, Inf Regiments.
335th Regt composed of 1st, 2d & 3d Inf battalions.
NO other detailed information concerning the various sub-units other than 2d Bn Hq.
2d Bn Hq consisted of approx 50 officers & EM.
It had: Medical Sqd (衛生兵), Signal Sqd (通信班), and Service Sqd (雜務班) attached.
Troops were equipped with 5 US carbines (80 rds per) and 2 grenades per man.
There was only one (1) field telephone in the Signal Sqd.
Each Company (連) of PW's unit had one North Korean interpreter who came with them from MANCHURIA.
CCF (38th Army) acted independently.

4. LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
PW stated that to his knowledge only the 335th Regt of 111th Div, 38th Army crossed the YALU River to SINUIJU from ANTUNG 20 Oct 50 (at night).
2n Bn Hq personnel, along with 800 troops, advanced to a mountain (location unknown) approx 36 Km E of SINUIJU o/a 6 Nov 50. during the movement, they did not contact any enemy troops. They travelled only during the night because of constant UN air raids.
After arriving at the mountain (location unknown), PW deserted because he was hungry & afraid of air raids (8 Nov 50).

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Joined the Nationalist Army on 25 Aug 44, and was with the CNA until Feb 48.
During above period, PW travelled through the following places: NANKING (南京), SHANGHAI (上海), TIENTSIN (天津), PEIPING (北平), CHINHUANG-TAO (秦皇島), CHINGHOU (錦州), SHENYANG (瀋陽), and SSUPING-CHIEH (四平街).
PW was captured by CCF (38th Army) at SSUPING-CHIEH (四平街) o/a 20 Feb 48: PW stated that about a division was captured in SUPING-CHIEH (number of troops unknown).
Since than, PW has been with the 2n Bn Hq (as a messenger in the Signal Sqd), 335th Regt, 111th Div 38th Army.
With the 38th Army, PW travelled to CHIUTAI (九台) and TIEHLING (鉄嶺) between 20 Feb 48 and d/u Aug 50.
111th Div of 38th Army departed from TIEHLING on 17 Oct 50 and crossed the YALU River on 20 Oct 50.
After crossing the YALU River, they travelled by train (3 nights) and marched on foot about 5 days. They arrived at a mountain (location unknown) where PW deserted on 8 Nov 50.
38th Army, 111th Div 335 the Regt, 2d Bn Hq (PW's unit) was located in TIEHLING (鉄嶺) until 17 Oct 50.
PW heard that only the 111th Div came to KOREA.
PW believed that the 38th Army did not participate in the invasion of HAINAN Island.

6. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food-Troops brought only 3 day's ration (rice & bread). After it was consumed, they confiscated food from villages.

7. SIGNAL INFORMATION:
There was only one (1) field telephone in the 2d Bn Hq; messengers were the chief means of communication.

8. GENERAL INFO:
Regular Army: Pvt (兵士), receives 80,000 YUAN; Company Commander receives 200,000 YUAN. No further information.
Former Nationalist soldiers were forced to join CCF when they were captured. Captured equipment from Nationalist Army was utilized by 38th Army.
