FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 1215) 13 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

ADDRESS: CHIANG-HSI-SHENG, NAN-KANG-HSIEN, TAI-TOU (江西省 南康縣 台頭)
DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: 101200 1 Nov 50 at an unknown place (according to PW Card PW was captured North CHIBANG-DONG (YE 355015)).

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cannot wrtie Chinese characters.
PW's inforamtion was very limited because he was only a cook in his unit, apparently PW was unobservant. The interpreter had a difficult time understanding the PW because of dialect.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF:
4th Field Army, 40th Army, 120th Div, 338th Regt, 2nd Bn, 4th Co, Cook Sqd.
338th Regiment: 3 Battalions (1st, 2nd, 3rd Bns) type of unit unknown.
2nd Battalion: 3 Rifle Companies.
10th Rifle Company: 3 Rifle Platoons and 1 Service Platoon.
Rifle Platoon: 3 Rifle Squads.

Service Platoon
A. Personnel:
Cook (Rice specialty) 9, Cook (Dishes specialty) 3, Cook (k.p.), Ass't Service leader and leader 2, Total 17.
Service platoon members did not carry weapons.

Rifle Platoon
A. Personnel:
1 Officer and 36 EM.
B. Equipment & Ammo:
M30 type Jap Rifle - 27 (80 rds per), Grease Gun (American) - 6 (rds unknown), Grenades - 4 per man.

10th Company
6 Officers and 125 EM.
Strength of Battalion, Regiment, Division and Army, unknown.
PW saw 10 Koreans who acted as interpreters in his Company. These men were believed to be in the CCF Army because they wore the same uniform. Rank was unknown.
PW's unit is intact under the same chain of command now it was prior to crossing the YALU River.
No parts of PW's units have been integrated into Korean units.
PW did not see any Artillery pieces except 60 mm Mortars. PW did not know to where these mortars were attached.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS: (As of 10 Nov 50)
After the 2nd Battalion began retreating, the PW took a rest. Suddenly, he heard small arms fire, and he surrendered.
Where abouts of 2nd Battalion unknown.
PW did not know what other units came to KOREA.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted on 6 Jun 49 at CHIANG-HSI-SHENG, NAN-KANG-HSIEN into the 358 Regt, 120th Div, CCF. Received no training. He was placed in the unit as a cook.
358th Regt left NAN-KANG-HSIEN by foot, d/u Aug 49 and arrived HUNAN-SHENG, CHIHSIANG-HSIEN (湖南省 具祥縣) in Aug 49.
358th Regt left CHI-HSIANG by foot in Sep 49 and arrived at KUANG-HSI (廣西) in Oct 49. Regt left KUANG-HSI in Oct 49 by foot and arrived at KUANGTUNG (廣東).
Basic infantry training was constantly taught at KUANGTUNG.
In Apr 50, the 358th Regt left KUANGTUNG by foot, passing KUANGCHOU (廣州), and arrived at ANTUNG in May 50. Reason for going to ANTUNG, unk. Further training.
O/a 20 Oct 50, the 2nd Bn crossed a steel bridge at night and by-passed SINUIJU into a mt. PW believed the 2nd Bn crossed the YALU River into KOREA because he talked to soldiers who came from other companies of the 2nd Bn.
PW did not know the places travelled after entering KOREA. PW did not see any other CCF unit in KOREA.
PW's units did not participate in the HAINAN Island invasion. PW heard that the 43rd Army participated in the invasion.

6. PERSONALITIES:
SUN FNU (孫), Co CO, 10th Co.

7. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
3 days ration was brought by troops when they crossed the YALU River. Source and supplies of ammo and food - unknown.

8. SIGNAL COMMUNICATIONS:
Bugles were used for communication.

9. MORALE:
The morale in his unit was low because they were forced to come to KOREA to fight.

10. GENERAL INFO:
PW was not a volunteer for Korean service nor was his unit. PW's unit did not undergo any amphibious training.
PW did not know anything about the Iron & Steel Brigade.
There were no Japanese units in CCF units. PW did not know if the Chinese Communists have Militia & Public Security units in addition to their regular troops.
Persons 18 to 40 years of age were inducted into the Army after a physical exam. There is no limitation to active service. There were two inductions per year. Number unk.
PW received 10,000 yuan per month. PW did not see any Soviet equipment in CCF Unit.
PW did not know when the CCF troops started to move into MANCHURIA.
No paratroop training in CCF Units.
PW stated that the political officer taught illiterate persons, like him, to write. Propaganda instruction, unk.
