FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS LDI 0163) 12 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: PAK Hyung Hok (朴瀅穆)
AGE: 21
RANK: Jr Lt

DATE AND PLACE CAPTURED: 101600 K Nov 50, at CHASAN-MYON (YD-5159)
CIVIL OCCUPATION: 1st People's Hospital (Surgeon)
EDUCATION: Technical Medical School 3 years


2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative during interrogation and volunteered all information known to him. However, since he did not actually join his unit and because of his poor memory in regards to names, places and dates, further interrogation is not recommended.

3. OWN UNIT:
PW was inducted at P'YONGYANG while employed at the 1st People's Hospital and simultaneously commissioned a Jr Lt with 2 other doctors, 25 Aug 50. 2 Sep 50, they were ordered to SEOUL by train and on foot. They were sent to the Officers Routing Center that very day where they remained for 11 days at which time PW alone was ordered to report at the 109th Regt, 38th Bn in SEOUL which was being organized. He did not go to the unit however because he heard of the INCH'ON landing by the enemy. O/a 19 Sep 50 PW and 27 doctors who were in the Officers Routing Center retreated north and arrived at UIJONGBU that same day. There PW and 5 medical officers were ordered to carry back beyond the 38th parallel 60 wounded NK troops using stretchers and 6 wagons. They arrived TONGDUCHON-NI (CS-2999) o/a 28 Sep 50 and took the wounded men to the city hall. He and 5 other doctors than returned to UIJONGBU the same night. Where they arrived there all the officers were gone whom they heard had retreated northward to CHORWON (CT-4334) from NK soldiers. They therefore retreated north and arrived at CHORWON o/a 2 Oct 50 and met all officers formerly of the Officers Routing Center. O/a 3 Oct 50, they (about 50 men) were ordered by their commander to retreat to SINGYE (ET-8564). While 10 Km away from CHORWON o/a 3 Oct 50, at night, PW and another officer escaped from this group pretending they could not walk further and arrived at a mountain approx 4 Km east of SAINJANG, o/a 17 Oct 50 via SINGYE and PYONGYANG. PW stayed there overnight where he turned himself in to the CHASAN-MYON.

4. MISSION:
PW believes that all officers from the Officers Routing Center were to retreat to P'YONGYANG. Further informtaion unknown.

5. ENEMY SUPPLY AND EQUIPMENT:
a. Supply.
Food consisted of rice, millet, vegetable, and meat. He does not know where the food was brought from. During retreat food was begged from villagers or taken from fields.

b. Equipment:
About 20 officers of the Officers Routing Center except the medical officers were equipped with pistols.
The Officers Routing Center had one Russian jeep for the use of the commanding officer and his staff officers.

6. ENEMY LOSSES:
During the period 19 Sep 50 to 28 Oct 50 PW and 5 other medical officers gave treatment to 60 wounded NK troops. These men were wounded in combat when enemy forces landed at INCHON and advanced to SEOUL. Most of them were seriously injured but none of them died.

7. PERSONALITIES:
KIM Hyong Uk (金瀅昱), Jr Lt, age about 20, Medical Officer
KIM Ki Sam (金基三), Jr Lt, age about 22, Medical Officer
The highest ranking officer of the Officers Routing Center was a Sr Col, name unknown, age about 40, commanding officer, medium built, about 5 ft 3 in, round face with mustache and dark complexion.

8. MISCELLANEOUS:
a. During retreat, all officers from the Officer Routing Center moved over the road to SINGYE only at night for fear of being spotted by the enemy aircrafts or forces.
b. PW stated morale among the Officers of Routing Center was high. However, the reason was unknown. PW was inducted into the service while employed at 1st People's Hospital at P'YONGYANG and always believed that war among his own people was not justified.
c. O/a 30 Sep 50 at a unknown place near the 38th parallel between TONGDUCHON-NI and YONCHON PW picked and read an UN Safe Conduct leaflet. He stated anyone caught by the other officers reading it were warned that they will be punished or tortured.
