1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW spoke freely and seemed sincere. Information seems fairly reliable. PW was a farmer prior to induction into the NKA. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology.
PW was inducted into the NKA at SINUIJU 1 Oct 50 and assigned to the 738th Bn which was located in SINUIJU. O/a 5 Oct 50, the 738th Bn was redesignated as the 9th Rifle Regt (4 Bns) and recruits from P'YONGAN PUKTO area were added to the Regt. O/a 10 Oct 50, the 9th Regt departed SINUIJU to u/k location with the exception of one (1) Rifle Bn (approx 700 men) which remained at SINUIJU and was designated as the Independent 4th Bn. All troops of the Ind 4th Bn received 30 days of training on infantry combat tactics at SINUIJU. O/a 3 Nov 50, the Ind 4th Bn departed SINUIJU and marched to KASAN (YD1597) arriving 9 Nov 50. 111300 Nov 50, while the Ind 4th Bn was preparing defensive positions in vic KASAN, it was attacked. The troops took cover in the hills in vic of KASAN, however, PW remained in a house and surrendered 121000 Nov 50.

b. Unit Organization and Strength.
The Ind 4th Bn consisted of seven (7) Rifle Cos (numbered from 1st to 7th consecutively). The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Co, each had a strength of approx 140-150 men. The 5th, 6th and 7th Co, each had a strength approx 100 men respectively.

c. Equipment.
The Ind 4th Bn, 4th Co had 17 SMGs, 8 LMGs, and rifles (Jap M38 and M99 and Russian M1891/30 rifles). Each man in the Co carried a weapon. Approx 400 hand grenades were distributed to the men of 4th Co.

d. Disposition.
The 17th Div was located on a mountain (YEO301) on 11 Nov 50.

e. Intentions.
PW stated that the mission of the Ind 4th Bn was to defend KASAN until arrival of a CCF Unit.

f. Knowledge of Other Units.
PW observed a large number of CCF troops on mountains located on both sides of a road, approx 14 km W of KASAN on 11 Nov 50. Unit designation of CCF troops unknown to PW.

g. Personalities.

h. Armor and Artillery.
During the night of 6 Nov 50, PW observed 5 SU-76s, 10 km W of CHONGJU (XD9095), heading eastward.

i. Morale.
Morale of Ind 4th Bn was very low due to intense cold. PW stated that broadcasts from airplanes had marked effect on the troops. Many were contemplating desertion but were held back due to fear of being caught by their superiors.

4. GENERAL:
a. Food and Ammo Supplies.
Food was transported by trucks from SINUIJU (route unknown).
