ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 2398　27 November 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - FWD #2 - 0001)　21 November 1950

PW was not hesitant in answering questions and was very well mannered. He seemed to be intelligent, observant and cooperative. Information obtained is considered reliable.

15 Sep 50 - Oct 50: 943rd Unit, 23rd Field Hospital, CHUNGWAH (中和).

3 Oct: Medical Corps evacuated to DONG DU MYON (東頭面) around 12 km from CHUNGWAH (中和).

12 Oct: Evacuated to SONCHYON (宣川) approx 120 km from DONG DU MYON (東頭面).

21 Oct: Evacuated to PIHYON (枇峴), approx 35 km away and arrived on the 23rd of Oct. Stayed at PIHYON for 2 days.

25 Oct: Evacuated to ICHYU (義州) approx 35 km away and arrived on the 26th of Oct, Stayed in ICHYU for 4 days. While taking care of 20 disabled persons, made his escape with 2 other medical officers. PW and the 2 other medical officers headed for SHINICHYU (新義州) 16 km from ICHYU (義州).

30 Oct - 5 Nov: Stayed in SHINICHYU (新義州).

13 Nov: Reached KASAN (嘉山).

14 Nov: Surrendered at YONG MI DONG (嶺美洞).

Disposition: PW believes medical corps Hq is now somewhere in MANCHURIA.

Equipment: 1. No communication equipment

2. Had 400 patients' beds

3. 2 civilian trucks & 2 buses

4. Armament-10 side arms, 20 rifles, and 1 machine gun (used by guards).

Supplies such as winter equipment, fuel, and rations were insufficient.

Morale: The morale of this unit was very low. PW stated that most of the personnel were forced into this unit. Supplies were insufficient.

Foreign Elements: PW saw around 2000 Chinese troops 3km N of PIHYON (枇峴) and around 4 or 5000 Chinese troops 2km S of PIHYON (枇峴). He also saw Chinese troops in SUN CHYON (宣川). He believes that the Chinese headquarters was located in this city. He also saw some Chinese troops 3km SE of CHUNG CHU (忠州). The above mentioned were all observed on the 5th, 8th, and 10th of Nov after he deserted.

a. Although PW was a nose, ear, and throat doctor he was used in surgical work without any previous training.

b. No one received any immunizations.

c. Ordinary surgical equipment was used, but it was insufficient. The unit also had a small type X-ray machine and 3 small operating tables. Medical supplies were also insufficient and what they possessed came from RUSSIA.

d. They utilized school buildings or churches but seldom took over civilian hospitals. The 26th Field Hospital Unit took over the SUNAN (順安) Hospital (Govt), about 20km from PYONGYANG.

e. Drinking water was obtained from wells and PW states that no measures were taken to purify the water. Water sources were not contaminated or poisoned by PW's unit when retreating.

f, The North Korean Contagious Disease Research laboratory located in PYONGYANG was producing bacteria and small-pox serum. AN CHIN YONG (安鎭英) a doctor, was once Chief of the Laboratory and PW believes he was instrumental in all research work done at this NKCD laboratory. The laboratory employed 200 and was operated by the Sanitation Ministry. Since PW was not actually working in this laboratory, he does not know what research was conducted.

31 Oct - 1 Nov: PW states that the Gov’t moved to ANTUNG (MANCHURIA) and there was a general evacuation to that town.
