FIELD REPORT (521 - MISD - 0303) 24 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and answered questions quickly. He made no effort to lie or evade. Reliability - fair.

3. MILITARY HISTORY:
Chronology:
5 Aug 50 - Inducted at CHOWON, and departed with a battalion whose designation he does not know.
25 Aug 50 - The Battalion arrived near WAEGWAN and three days later was ordered to withdraw. It moved northward to ANDONG, where it split up and men proceeded to CHORWON individually.
23 Sep 50 - Arrived alone at CHORWON. Here PW received orders from the Bn CO to proceed to KANGGYE, as the other elements of the BN had already gone. PW departed with three others.
14 Nov 50 - PW and two others arrived at SACHANG NI where they met the Independent Security Forces 2d Battalion. They were attached to this battalion; PW became runner for the Bn Ex Off.
22 Nov 50 - The 2d Bn moved northward out of SACHANGNI at about 1100 hours and about 1400 hours (with the exception of the 1st Co and the Bn CO who had proceeded to CHIKTONG) engaged a UN Forces Unit. The engagement lasted about ten minutes. PW was dispatched to order the CO of the 3d Company to withdraw to CHIKTONG but he was captured enroute A similar order was dispatched to the CO of the 2d Co. PW estimates there was a total of 100 casualties in the 2d Bn in this engagement.

4. ORGANIZATION:
The Independent Security Forces 2d Bn consisted of 3 Inf Cos. Total Bn strength was about 600 when it left SACHANG NI on 22 Nov 50. Armor included 20 machine guns, 30 PPSH sub machine guns, 2 x 60 mm mortars, and rifles. There was sufficient ammunition.

5. KNOWLEDGE OF OTHER UNITS:
15 Nnv 50 - About 12, 000 CCF troops passed through SACHANG NI from the N and headed toward YONG DONG NI. Some of these troops were of Korean extraction (very few). When PW asked one of these the number of troops, the reply was 12,000. The troops marched in two files. There were intervals between various elements and they passed through in two days. Observed some artillery, machine guns, submachine guns and rifles.
18 Nov 50 - Observed elements of the NKA 5th Division following the river road from the South puss through SACHANG NI to the North. Overheard a conversation of the 2d Battalion Ex O and an officer of the Division (identified thru insignia as a Major) during which he learned the strength of the Div was 500, and its destination KANGGYE. About half were armed. Observed no machine guns or heavier weapons.
19 Nov 50 - Observed elements of the NKA 2d Division following the same route taken by the 5th Division. Through conversing with one of the men he learned that its strength was about 800 and the destination was KANGGYE via SOBACKSAN. (40°02' N 126°55'E). A few PPSH submachine guns were observed and about half the Division appeared to be armed.
