ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative, talked freely. Reliability, fair.

MILITARY HISTORY:
1 Sep 50 - Inducted at NANAM (羅南), attached to 580th Unit, 2nd Bn, 82MM Mortar Co, 1st Plat. All recruits except officers and NCOs.
16 Sep 50 - 580th Unit de parted NANAM by rail,
1 Oct 50 - Arrived CHORWON (鐵原).
2 Oct 50 - 580th Unit departed CHORWON on foot,
3 Oct 50 - Arrived HWACHON (樺川); attackep by UN air force, entire unit scattered, PW deserted.
12 Nov 50 - PW captured at KILCHU after taking circuitous mountain route via CHANGJIN and KAPSAN.

FOREIGN ELEMENTS:
CCF: 1 Nov 50, at CHANGJIN (長津), PW observed approx 2,000 troops. They were quartered in native homes and hid in mountains during air attacks. They were quilted uniforms and PW heard from a native that they were soon to depart, destination unknown. One Korean interpreter was attached to each plat.
The following weapons were observed on both sides of the main road about 12 Km E of CHANGJIN: about 20 x 7.62 Degtyarev LMGs, 10/HMGs, and 10 x 82MM mortars. PW also observed about 50 horse drawn 76MM 1939 guns, 3 trucks with 76MM 1942 guns attached, 3 jeeps, officers armed with PPSHs and pistols, and EM armed with bolt action rifles with about 200 rds of ammo and 2 hand grenades.
580 Unit (92nd Regt) - 6 Bns. Each Bn - 3 Inf Cos, 82MM Mortar Co, 76MM Gun Plat, 45MM Gun Plat, Reconn Plat, and Signal Plat.
Strength: 2nd Bn - 662. 82MM Mortar Co - 50. Each Plat - 15.
Weapons: Inf Cos - Mosin 1891/30 rifles w/over 100 rds of ammo. 82MM Mortar Co - Model 38 Jap rifles. 76MM Gun Plat - Model 38- Jap rifles w/60 rds. 45MM Gun Plat - Model 38 Jap rifles w/60 rds. Infantry men each had 2 hand grenades. No other weapons.

MORALE:
Low; troops realized they were fighting a hopeless war.

FOOD & CLOTHING:
580 Unit received old Chinese summer uniforms at NANAM. Received cotton (black and olive drab) uniforms at CHORWON, 1 Oct 50.
Food was insufficient and highly irregular. Consisted mostly of rice and millet.

NK SENTIMENT:
People hated the NKA because of forced conscription and confiscation of food. They are eagerly waiting for entry of ROK troops.

2nd Bn, 580 Unit:
TUMAN GANG (豆滿江), NAKTONG GANG (洛東江), HAEDAN (解放), SUNGRI (勝利), CHONTAKPAN (銃탁판) and KERYONGSAN (鷄龍山). In addition, numbers were used. These numbers and words were changed daily and used alternately.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
a. 1 Nov 50, PW heard that a Hq was located in CHANGJIN and stragglers soldiers were told to assemble there.
b. 1 Nov 50, saw 568 Unit located about 24 Kms N of CHANGJIN. Heard that this unit would engage in battle at a site about 12 Kms E of that location.
c. 5 Nov 50, heard at KAPSAN from a civilian that there was a large concentration of troops there and that a Hq also situated there.
d. 7 Nov 50, heard at HAESAN (惠山) from a civilian that a large unit had departed towards PEKTOSAN (白頭山).
e. 9 Nov 50, at TANCHON GUN, PUKTUIL MYON, HAKSON RI (端川郡 北斗面 龍山里) PW heard that 50 members of the Ministry of Interior were recruiting men from 16 to 45 for the NKA. All those resisting were shot.
