ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 2196　4 November 1950

FIELD REPORT (521 - MISD - 0177)　31 October 1950

PW was cooperative and spoke freely. He deserted his unit on 18 Oct 50.

Reliability - Good.

24 Sep 50 - Inducted at PYONGYANG (平壤) and attached to 1st NCO School at PYONGYANG

1 Oct 50 - Unit designated as 3rd Co, 5th Bn, Ind Trng Brig.

18 Oct 50 - 1st and 3rd Plats of 3rd Co, consisting of one officer and 60 men arrived SUNAN (順安) (YD 3242) and turned over rifles and ammo to local police. The Co Comdr and other officers had departed for place unknown prior to this date. The plat leader in charge told the men that the brig will reassemble at SINUIJU (新義州) and that the men should report there. PW and another man deserted that night and started with journey W.

19 Oct 50 - Arrived SUNCHAN (順川) and observed paratroop drop at SUNCHAN.

20 Oct 50 - Arrived KAECHON (价川)。

22 Oct 50 - Arrived HUICHON (熙川) and observed large concentration of NK troops. PW spoke to one of the soldiers and was told that they were going to KANGGYE (江界). He met more NK troops on mountain E of HUICHON who were also travelling toward KANGGYE.

23 Oct 50 - Arrived YONGNIM DONG and observed sign on road junction which read 13th Div, Liaison Office. Guard at the junction inquired as to PW’s destination, and when told that he was going to PUNGSAN (豊山), replied that the 54th Arty Regt was also going there. Approx 2 kms W of YONGNIM DONG, in the vicinity of NAMHUNG DONG PW met and spoke to members of CCF. (PW lived in MANCHURIA for about 3 yrs). Size of unit could not be determined due to darkness, but he was told that there were many more coming through MANPOJIN (滿浦鎮). He was also told that 700,000 CCF troops with about 3,000 planes will be on their way to chase the American out of KOREA. Each CCF soldier was equipped with a rifle but no other weapons were observed.

24 Oct 50 - Arrived YUDAM Ni (柳渾鎭) and observed CCF troops in about 15 homes within the village.

25 Oct 50 - Arrived HAGARU Ri (下碣隅里) and heard from civilian that CCF troops were in town. PW observed over 300 CCF troops with about 20 horses marching from SASU (泗水) (near SINHUNG Ni (新興里) approx. 8 km NE of HAGARU Ri) towards HAGARU Ri. No weapons were observed.

26 Oct 50 - Arrived WONPUNG (元豊里).

27 Oct 50 - PW surrendered.

Organization of Ind Trng Brig not known. PW has knowledge of 6 bns in the brig.

Strength of the 5th Bn was approx 300 men with 100 men in each co.

Two thirds of the men were equipped with rifles and 30 to 45 rds of ammo.
