2. ASSESSMENT:
Information is considered reliable. PW was cooperative but only had limited knowledge of his unit.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
3 Jul 50: Conscripted and went to Pyongyang Officers Training School.
20 Jul 50: Graduated and commissioned Jr Lt. Departed for CHORWON.
25 Jul 50: Arrived CHORWON and assigned to the 3rd Co, 863 Unit (120 mm mortar Bn).
25 Aug 50: 863 Unit moved to SEOUL.
16 Oct 50: Arrived in CHORWON and found it occupied by UN Forces. PW and 6 other surrendered.

Unit Organization & Strength:
Original Organization & Strength:
There were 3 x 120mm mortar Cos in the 863 unit. Approx 56 men made up one Co.

Equipment (863 Unit) (120mm mortar Bn):
18 x 120 mm mortars; 15 SMG’s; 250 x 120 mm Arty Shells. As of 25 Aug 50.

Unit History (836 Unit):
20 Jul 50: The 863rd Unit (120 mm mortar Bn) was activated at CHORWON composed of recruits 80% of whom were middle school students.
25 Aug 50: The 863 Unit moved to SEOUL and trained men on the use of 120 mm mortars.
12 Sep 50: PW heard from members of the 863 unit that the unit was establishing positions in INCHON to prevent the landing of a UN fleet.

Communication:
Telephones (Russian made) were used occasionally to relay messages from CO Hq to Bn Hq. Runners were more frequently used.

Personalities:
863 Unit CO - PYONG, Ho Yol, Maj. Formerly of the Manchurian 8th Route Army.

Morale and Propaganda:
Morale of PW’s unit was very low since most of them were students and they had no interest in the war.
