Unit Organization and Strength:
In the 61st Rear Hospital, there was a Hospital Director, (Doctor), Asst Hospital Director (Doctor) (PW). The 1st Ward Medical Officer (Doctor), 2nd Ward Medical Officer (Surgeon), 3rd Ward Medical Officer (Physician) and 4th Ward Medical Officer (Physician). In every ward in addition to the Medical Officer, there were two or three medical apprentices, who were graduates of Medical Technical School.
The professional ability of these medical officers according to PW, was satisfactory, however, the PW and the Hospital Director were the only two who graduated from Medical College and had completed their internship. The Medical Officer of Ward One and Two were graduates of PYONGYANG Medical Technical School who had many yrs of apprentice work. All of the medical officers were holders of General Practice Certificates. The wounded were sent to the 61st Rear Hospital from the Field Hospital.
The 61st Rear Hospital was like a medical liaison station. They usually sent wounded men to the PYONGYANG Central Hospital as soon as they were treated.
The critically wounded are sent to PYONGYANG Central Hospital and the slightly wounded are also sent to PYONGYANG, where the army personnel section is situated. When they reach PYONGYANG they are promoted one grade or more, depending on the deeds performed at the battlefront, and from there these men are sent to different units.
Political officers gave lectures to the patients on Communist ideologies at the hospital.
PW believes the organizational setup of this Rear Hospital to be similar to the Russian setup, because it was administered by the Chief of the Political Section.
The Political Officers had considerable say in the administration of the hospital. The Medical Officers were ordered to report all self-inflicted wounds to the Political Officers. They were not allowed to discuss the war with the patients. They were allowed to say that the NK Troops were still winning.
All of the wounded are given a tentanus injection as they come into the Rear Hospital. PW states there was a sufficient quantity of supplies and equipment, but the quality is far below average. There were numerous cases of dysentery and malnutrition.
Two Sanitation Officers went to the units and made analysis of the water and checked the food, mess halls and latrines. They checked about three times a month. PW stated that their frequent inspections were very fruitful, and the cases of dysentery decreased greatly. These men came from the Surgeon General’s Office in PYONGYANG.
There was an innoculation program drawn up and ordinarily, the soldiers were given shots twice a year, however, in locations where a disease is prevalent, they are given shots when they arrive in the area. The soldiers were given innoculations against Cholera, Typhus, Plague and Small Pox.
In Apr 50, there was a measles epidemic in the vicinity of HAEJU, SARIWON and KUMCHON. PW estimated that out of about 200 young people, the mortality rate was 50%. This occurred before the semi-annual innoculation was given.
Percentage of wounded who died from wounds while in the hospital was very low. PW estimates about 10% die, chiefly due to severity of the wounds.
