2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and appeared to be of average intelligence. His limited length of military service prevented him from giving details.
Information seems to be fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
3 Jul 50: Conscripted in PYONGYANG and attended Officers’ School.
4 Aug 50: Completely schooling and commissioned Jr Lt. Assigned to 3rd Independent Anti-landing Engr Bn.
16 Sep 50: Promoted to Lt. 3rd Bn departed PYONGYANG on foot.
30 Sep 50: Arrived in vicinity N of HAEJU (海州). Bn went through a short training cycle on anti-landing tactics.
17 Oct 50: Completed training. 3rd Bn retreated toward SARIWON (沙里院), upon hearing that UN Forces was advancing to HAEJU.
21 Oct 50: PW surrendered to ROK Army, after his unit dispersed.

Believed to have been dispersed or annihilated on 21 Oct 50 in the vicinity of SARIWON (沙里院).

26 Sub Mgs; 5 trucks to haul supplies, food, etc.; 200 anti-tank land mines; 93 anti-personnel land mines.

Unit History:
3rd Indep Engr Bn was one of the five (5) similar Bns, activated on 4 Aug 50 in PYONGYANG, with an average strength of 400 men each. The five Bns received separate orders directly from the Defense Ministry. The code numbers of each Bn follows: 1st Indep Engr Bn (No. 813 Unit); 2nd Indep Engr Bn (no. 814 Unit) ; 3rd and 5th Indep Engr Bn (no. 817 Unit). The APO numbers for the five Bns are 2571, 2572, 2573, 2574, and 2575 respectively.

Intentions: (3rd Indep Engr Bn)
This unit evidently was assigned the task of setting up defensive land mine areas, as it retreated along the roads from HAEJU (海州) toward SARIWON (沙里院). However, the 3rd Engr Bn retreated too fast to make use of their mines. The Bn was dispersed near SARIWON before it could do any damage.

Morale and Propaganda:
The morale of PW’s unit (3rd Bn) was low because the majority of the soliders were conscripted and did not receive adequate training.

PW did not see or hear anything, concerning the presence of Russian or Chinese Forces in KOREA during the present war.
