Subjects Studied During 1st OCS 15 Day Training:
During the 15 day training of engineer officer candidates during the period 25 Jul 50 - 14 Aug 50, emphasis seemed to have been placed on the safeguarding of defensive positions. The subject which took the most time was trench construction. Next was the destruction of line of communication.
In the laying of anti-tank mines, two different methods were taught to be employed as squad action and platoon action. For the former action, 10-15 mines were each attached by a rope one meter long to another rope 40m long spaced at an interval of 3-4 meter along the long rope. These mines were buried (covered by one cm to two cm of dirt) perpendicular to the advancing enemy column. This chain of mines was baked up by other chains of mines of similar pattern. The second chain was laid diagonally, I.e. one end of the chain would be 40 meters from the 1st line. This would be reversed for the third chain of mines, and so forth.
For platoon action, an imaginary line was first drawn as the anchor. From this line, the mine, with an interval of 4 meters, was set, at various distances. The 1st mine was stepped off 60 paces in the direction of the advancing enemy, the 2nd mine 30 paces, the 3rd 15 paces and the 4th was kept on the line. This was repeated, in fours, until the desired line was effected. (SEE SKETCH B)
For the latter method, the students were instructed to use their own judgment when stepping off the distances of the mines depending upon the immediate situation. The above two methods were only to be applied in open Terrain.
Type of mine issued Eng Co, 2nd Bn 26th Brigade:
150 6 or 7 kg TM- 41 anti-tank mines (in square wooden cases)
150 MV-5 pressure igniter
20 POMZ-2 anti-personnel mines
