8 Oct 50 - Arrived at a point on the 38th parallel N of KORANGP’O-RI. The HMG Bn was partially equipped with HMG, but the PW’s 45mm AT Gun Battery had no Arty pieces from the time it was organized.
11 Oct 50 - The PW’s AT Gun Battery was issued rifles and told to take defensive positions on the 38th parallel. UN troops laid an Arty Barrage. Troops were told to hold their position, but under the intense Arty Barrage the Bn was routed. PW, the CO of 2nd HMG Company, and about one platoon of troops surrendered to ROK troops.

Organization and Strength:
The 26th Ind Brigade consisted of the following:
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th HMG Bns with an approximate original strength of 650 men; One Infantry Bn with an approximate original strength of 1,000 men; One Arty Bn; One Engineer Bn; One Signal Company.

The 4th HMG Bn consisted of the following:
1st and 2nd HMG Company; 1st and 2nd Infantry Company with about 100 men in each Company; One 82mm mortar Company; One 45mm AT Battery with original strength of 43 men; one Engineer Company; Signal Platoon; Anti-tank Rifle Platoon; Anti-Aircraft MG Platoon; Medical Unit with 3 Medics; Supply Platoon.
PW did not know the organization of the Arty Bn, but believed the pieces were distributed among the Inf and HMG Bns.
PW heard that the original total strength of the 26th Brigade was 4,000. Believes that the 4th HMG Bn no longer exists.

Equipment:
HMG Bn had the following equipment:
a. Authorized 18 HMG, but had only 12 MAXIM (1910) HMG in each HMG Company. There were 5/250 round boxes of ammunition per HMG.
b. M 1891/30 rifles with 100 rounds each.
c. M 1924/27 carbines with 100 rounds each.
d. The 82mm Mortar Company was authorized 9 82mm Mortar but had only two.
e. The 45mm AT Gun Company was authorized 6 4mm AT Gun, but had none on hand.
f. AT Rifle Plat had no weapons on hand.
g. AA MG Plat had no weapons.

Arty Bn had the following weapons. No, Unknown.
a. 76mm Field Guns.
b. 122mm Howitzers.

Disposition:
As of 11 Oct 50 the 3rd HMG Bn was on the left flank of the PW’s 4th HMG Bn.
On 11 Oct 50, the last order received from Brigade Hq was to take defensive positions and hold back the advancing UN Troops. PW believes the 4th Bn was completely disorganized.

Other Units:
Heard that the 27th Brigade was organized at KUMCH’ON at the same time as the 27th Brig. Heard that another Brigade was organized in CH’ORWON.
While PW was attending P’YONGYANG Military Academy he learned that graduates of the school were being assigned to various training Camps formerly occupied by Units that were then deployed in South Korea. He learned that new units were being organized in these former Training Camps. He knew of fellow academy graduates being assigned to the following places:

1. P’YONGYANG where the NK Capitol Division was formerly stationed.
2. SARIWON: Former Training Camp of a Regiment of the 1st Div.
3. NANAM: Formerly 3rd Div’s Camp
4. CH’ORWON - One brigade was organized here.
5. CHINNAMP’O
6. HAEJU
7. SINUIJU - Heard that the 14th Div was stationed here.
8. NAMCH’ONJOM - Where the 27th Brigade was organized.
9. KUMCH’ON - The 27th Brigade was organized here.

The Above Training Camps organized Units while fighting was going on in South Korea, Consequently PW believes newly organized units trained in these camps are presently deployed in North Korea or have fought in SEOUL IN INCH’ON.
PW hear that the 26th and 27th Brigade and the Brigade or organized at CH’ORWON were the last Units organized in North Korea. These Brigades were composed of men between 35 and 37 yrs of age.
PW believes if new Units are presently being formed in North Korea they are organized from wounded troops discharged from the hospitals and troops who have escaped to North Korea from the Southern Campaign.

Supply:
Food supply was ample during the time PW was with the 27th Brigade. Troops ate three time a day. The 4th HMG Bn was issued winter clothing when they arrived near KORANGP’O-RI

Morale:
Although the troops of the 26th Brigade had 20 days training, they were ex-farmers, aged between 35-37 yrs. They had no will to fight. Morale was generally low.
