3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
Jan 46 - Jun 48 - Served with NK RR Security Unit and was discharged in Jun 48 in grade of Major .
Jun 48 - Jul 50 - Worked as reporter and administrator for the “MINJIU CHOSON” (民主朝鮮) a newspaper published in P’YONGYANG.
Jul 50 - The “MINJIU CHOSON” (民主朝鮮) moved from P’YONGYANG to SEOUL and was renamed the “CHOSON INMINBO” (朝鮮人民報). PW moved to SEOUL with the paper.
Jul 50 - Sep 50 - Worked for the above newspaper.
3 Sep 50 - PW was drafted into the Security Forces at SEOUL in previously held grade of Major.
12 Sep 50 - Arrived TAEJON with 20 officers and 20 NCO’s. All were assigned to 37th Bn, 109th Security Regt. The 109th Regt was activated on 3 Sep 50 at UNJIN (恩津). It was the first unit of the 109th Regt to be activated. PW assumed command of the 37th Bn. 400 recruits from CH’ONGJU arrived TAEJON.
15 Sep 50 - PW arrived at KOKSONG (谷松) to procure men from the military training center. PW received 1,000 men.
23 Sep 50 - 400 of the 1,000 men were assigned to the 37th Bn in UNJIN. 400 men were assigned to the 38th Bn in KUMSAN (錦山). The remaining 200 men were assigned to the 39th Bn in TAEJON in addition to the 400 men received from CH’ONGJU. The 40th Bn in CH’ONGJU (清州) had recruited 400 men by this date.
23 Sep 50 - 25 Sep 50 - The weapons alloted to the 109th Regt were 30 x 9.9 Jap rifles, 10 US BAR, 1 PPsh SMG, 1 German Auto-Rifle, and 5 M1891/30 Rifles. There were 10 rounds of ammunition per rifle and 30 rounds per automatic rifle. The Regt had no grenades or other equipment. On 25 Sep 50, the strength of the 37th Bn was approx 508 men since some stragglers of the NKA had been found. Total strength was about 3,000 men.
25 Sep 50 - 37th Bn was ordered to move from UNJIN to CH’ONGJU by 2200 hours, 28 Sep 50, and to receive 300 additional men at the NOSONG Training Center enroute. The reason for the move was to train the Bn in a safer location. In compliance, two (2) companies were ordered to proceed to CH’ONGJU via TAEJON. The companies departed UNJIN. The order from the Regt further stated that the Bn CO was to arrive at CHONGJU ahead of his unit.
26 Sep 50 - PW ordered the remaining company to proceed to CHONGJU via TAEJON. Also ordered his Operations Officer to pick up the 300 men at the NOSONG Training Center. After doing so, PW departed UNJIN by bicycle, alone, and made his way to CHANGGI, via KONGJU (公州).
27 Sep 50 - PW realized the hopelessness of the situation and decided to surrender. Consequently, instead of going to CH’ONGJU as he was ordered, proceeded toward CH’ONAN.
29 Sep 50 - PW arrived at CH’ONAN and surrendered to UN Forces.
Disposition:
PW believes that the 109th Regt had disbanded since 70% of its members were ROK citizens who were forcibly inducted into the Security Forces.
Morale:
The morale of the troops were very low because the men had little or no military training and consequently had no desire to live a regimented life. The morale of the other officers were also very low because most of them only had a month or two of military experience.

Other Units:
The only RR Security Brigade in NK is still in existence and has not been incorporated into the NKA as of Oct 50. The brigade is composed of an estimated 8,000 men assigned to 10 separate battalions of 800 men each. The headquarters of the brigade was situated in SEOUL until the early part of Sep when it was moved to P’YONGYANG. A large part of the brigade was stationed at railroad centers south of the 38th Parallel until early Sep but since then, the units have been transferred north of the 38th Parallel.
The men of the brigade were poorly trained since most of them were replacements for the trained personnel who had been transferred to combat units. The weapons of the brigade were rifles and automatic rifles.
