ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1971　23 October 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 1178)　17 October 1950

PW was cooperative, but not able to give detailed information. Information reliable.

25 Aug 50 - Conscripted into NKA and due to his many years of education, was sent to No 1 Military Academy in P’YONGYANG. Received basic training for approx 15 days and was commissioned Jr Lt.

10 Sep 50 - Arrived at NAMCH’ON (南川) and was appointed platoon leader, 26th Ind Regt, 4th HMG Bn, 1st Co, 1st Plat. Here he trained his platoon on infantry exercises.

O/a 25 Sep 50 - The 4th HMG Bn arrived at a mountain which was believed to be located approx 30 km E of YONCH’ON. The Bn was engaged in digging trenches on the slopes of the mountains.

5 Oct 50 - The 4th HMG Bn arrived at PAEKHAK (白鶴).

6 Oct 50 - PW and his platoon was ordered by the Bn CO to go to KORANGP’O-Ri (高浪浦里) and fight US troops that were advancing. However, instead of fighting, he persuaded his men to surrender and they were not captured while resting after having lunch.

No 1 MILITARY ACADEMY, P’YONGYANG, KOREA

Obs: 25 Aug - 10 Sep 50

PW was conscripted into the NKA on 25 Aug 50. He was sent to the No 1 Military Academy which was located approx 6 km E of the main RR station on the edge of the city.

This military academy for the NKA started classes since the end of World War II. This school was formerly a military camp for the Japanese Army.

Normally the terms of the school was 3 years, but since the outbreak of the Korean conflict the students were graduated and commissioned in a matter of a few weeks. Prior to the Korean War, men who had been in the Japanese Army and who had good records were usually selected and sent to this school. Graduates of this school were given Capt and Sr Lt commissions.

Students who went to this school for 3 years were taught such subjects as mathematics, history, tactics, and infantry training. Before starting classes the students were assigned to their branch of service.

Since the outbreak of the Korean War only infantry training was taught to the students who were graduated as officers.

PW heard that the director of this Academy was a Maj Gen. This mad had been a Russian citizen and had trained in RUSSIA although he is of Korean ancestry. It was heard that this general officer came to KOREA soon after the end of World War II. Although PW has not seen this man, he believed that he was an elderly officer,

The school was divided into sections and each section was of battalion strength. The battalion commander was usually a Lt Col.

During the period PW attended this Academy, approximately 7,000 students were enrolled. The school buildings were of brick construction and they were scattered over a wide area. The tanks, artillery pieces and other equipment used at this school were all of Russian manufacture.

Saw 5 high ranking Russian Officers walking around the school area with Korean Officers on 2 occasions.

When PW left the school it had not been bombed by UN planes and PW believes that the school is still untouched.

No 2 MILITARY ACADEMY, P’YONGYANG, KOREA

Hearsay - Sep 50

IT was heard that the above school was located approximately 8 km N of the main RR station on the edge of the city.

Men who were members of the Communist or Labor Party were sent to this school on the recommendation of the local party leaders. Political officers were trained here and were graduated with ranks of Sr Lt or higher. After graduation these officers were sent to various units.

26th BRIGADE, KUMCH’ON (金泉川), KOREA

Obs: 10 Sep - 6 Oct 50

Brigade was organized in mid-Aug 50, at NAMCH’ON (南川) as a defense unit for the 38o Parallel and the KUMCH’ON Area.

Practically all the men were unarmed. Those who were armed had 7.62-mm “Mossin Nagant” M1891/30 Rifles only.

A Col acted as temporary Brigade CO and set up his headquarters in NAMCH’ON (南川). In early Sep 50, a Maj Gen took his post as Brigade CO.

Brigade Hq moved YONCH’ON (連川) on 28 Sep 50, and to KUMCH’ON on 5 Oct 50, The Bns of the regt followed the route of the regimental Hq.

On 7 Oct 50, Bn Hqs was disbanded due to the rapid advancing of UN troops (hearsay).

This Brigade had not seen any action up until 6 Oct 50, when PW was captured.

This officer was formerly in the CCF and came to KORA sometime this year.

26th BRIGADE, 4th HMG BN - PAEKHAK (白鶴)

Obs: 5 Oct 5

There were 600-700 men and officers in this Bn. Their last station was at PAEKHAK. PW did not know what became of the battalion as he and his platoon of 38 men surrendered on 6 Oct 50.

The battalion CO was Capt KIM, To Song (金道成). (Hearsay) This officer was killed on 7 Oct 50. Bn Cultural officer - HAN (fnu) (韓); Sr Lt; Age 28. This Sr Lt was wounded and has been sent to a hospital in North KOREA. He acted as asst Bn CO.

PW believed that most of the men in this battalion who had not been killed have been captured.
