2. ASSESSMENT:

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
1 Nov 46 - Volunteered for the army at BOTANKO, MANCHURIA.
16 Aug 47 - Left BOTANKO, MANCHURIA by train for KACHANGNI (가정리) and assigned to 1st Regt which was being organized in SINUIJU (新義州).
2 Sep 48 - PW went to PYONGYANG where he was assigned to Patrol Unit of Officer Training School at TUKPYOL, SADONG LI (　　　).
28 Aug 50 - Commissioned Jr Lt and assigned to 27th Brig, Political Section which was newly organized in KUMCHON. About 20 days training.
18 Sep 50 - Retreated with 635 Unit to MUNSAN (文山) without engaging in battle.
30 Sep 50 - 635 Unit retreated to KAESONG and was defeated 13 Oct 50.
14 Oct 50 - PW fled N of KUMCHON to HAMPO where he was surrounded by US troops and reluctantly surrendered.

Unit Organization and Strength:
635 Unit or 27th Brig.
27th Brig was comprised of 9 Bns and 3 Ind Cos
1st - 4th Bn; HMG Bn
5th Bn - Ind Engr Bn
6th Bn - Ind Inf Bn
7th Bn - Ind 76mm Arty Bn
8th Bn - Ind 120mm Mortar Bn
9th Bn - Ind Tank Bn
Ind Co were : Comm, Recon, and Transp. PW estimated 42 Cos (excluding the 3 Ind Cos) in the Brig; (7 Cos to a Bn (?) ), The manpower of the 27th Brigade was approx 5,000.

Equipment:
There were about 30 HMG in the Brig.

About 4 - 76mm cannon

〃　800 - Automatic Rifles
〃　20 - 82mm mortars
PW believes that this equipment was probably either damaged or captured when the UN Forces overran the unit in KAESONG and KUNCHON.

Disposition:
The Brig Hqs was located in a tunnel about 4 km S of KUMCHON RR Sta, 4 km N of KAECHON RR Sta.

Intentions:
Most of the troops are gradually retreating to PYONGYANG (平壞) to fortify the city.

Knowledge of other Units:
In the 14th Regt the men in the 3rd Bn were all Koreans who resided in BOTANKO, MANCHURIA and volunteered in the Manchurian Army.

Personalities:
635 Unit Political Officer: SHIN, Li Pung; Col; age - 33.
Believed to have died from injury caused by land mines (not definite).

Morale and Propaganda:
Morale was low due to lack of weapons, and training. Food was scarce. However, the foremost reason for the majority being demoralized was because, they were forced in the army and received abusive treatment during that time.
Propaganda leaflets are very effective, PW noticed many men, throwing their rifles away and voluntarily surrendering to UN Forces.
