3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
23 Feb 49 - Inducted at P’YONGYANG (平壤). Received direct commission as Jr Lt. Duty as Supply Section Clerk, NK Rear Security Dept at P’YONGYANG.
25 May 49 - Transferred to HAEJU (海川). Duty as Fodder Supply Plt Ldr, HAEJU Cavalry Bn.
5 Aug 49 - Transferred to UNGGI-Dong (雄基洞), duty as interpreter at Custom Inspector’s Officer. Promoted to Lt.
15 Jul 50 - Transferred to SEOUL and assigned as Chief of Food Supply Section, 23rd Bn, 104th Security Regt.
Left Seoul by train 18 Jul 50 and arrived Sachon 12 Aug 50 via Chochiwon, Taejon, Muju and Chinju
27 Sep 50 - Surrounded by UN Forces. Bn disorganized.
29 Sep 50 - PW and 100 men of Bn Hq arrived KUMSAN (錦山) via SANCH’ONG (山清). PW left Bn Hq alone.
30 Sep 50 - Arrived OKCH’ON and voluntarily surrendered to Police force.

Composition of Unit:
Unit was about 1/3 North Korean and 2/3 South Korean conscripts as of 28 Jun 50 at SEOUL.
104th Security Regt - 2,500 men
1st Bn - 600 men SAMCH’ONP’O (三千浦)
14th Bn - 600 men KOSONG (固城)
21st Bn - 600 men NAMHAE (南海)
23rd Bn - 600 men SANCH’ON (泗川) APO 6084 Bn composed of three (3) companies of 150 men; Co composed of three (3) platoons of 45 men.

Intentions:
29 Sep 50, at KUMSAN, 23rd Bn CO, told his men to go home if they wanted to. CP went to SECH’ON (細川).

4. GENERAL:
UNGGI-Dong Customs Inspection Officer is located approx 8 km from UNGGI-Dong RR Station. On the other side of the TUMAN (豆滿) River, there is a Russian Custom Inspection Office. Bridge across the river is approx 210 m long and approx 6 m wide. 150 m is on Korean side and 60 m on USSR side.
Railroad between UNGGI-Dong and KASHINO (ZPACKHO) in RUSSIA is under construction. Approx 70 km completed as of Jun 50. Railroad from KASHINO approx 24 km completed. Scheduled to be completed before Dec 50. RR from UNGGI-Dong to border, approx 8 km. 70% completed. PW believes this must be completed by now (single track).
Approximately one km N of the bridge, between NK Custom Office and Russian Custom Office, there was a RR Bridge under construction since May 50. Scheduled to be completed before May 51 under the one year plan.
Between 5 Aug 49 and 29 Jun 50, approx 60-100 Russians passed the Custom Inspection Officer per month. Mostly civilians. Also 60-100 Korean nationals passed per month.
O/a Feb 50, approx 80 Russian Officers and 120 dependents went to P’YONGYANG. These officers had just graduated from the KHABAROVSK Korean Language School after an average of 2 years study, and spoke SEOUL dialect. They were 25-40 years old and were Lts. They also spoke English and could write Korean, and were to report to the P’YONGYANG Russian Advisor Hq.
Percentage of Various Russian Service Branches that were sent to North KOREA:
30% Infantry Officers
15% Medical Service officers
15% Tank and Mechanized officers
15% Artillery officers
7% Combat Engr officers
6% Road Construction officers
6% Motor Transport officers
6% Signal officers
O/a 10 Mar 50, approx 70 Russian officers and 80 NCO’s who had been in KOREA since 45 went back to MOSCOW. Passports were issued by ARASHIRO (APACUPOY)

Transportation of Ammunition:
At YANGDOK (陽德),o/a 8 Feb 50, PW observed approx 20-25 freight cars carrying arms and ammunition to P’YONGYANG. PW only observed one car closely, which carried HMG ammunition. Boxes were marked with a big X in yellow paint. Box - 40cm x 25cm x 25cm. Rifle ammunition box is same size as HMG ammunition box, but not marked with the X.

Kinds of Passes:
1. Border Pass (пропскд), valid for 6 months, issued by North KOREA Provincial Ministry of Interior Hq or by Russia.
2. Passport (пдrподрт), valid for 12 months, issued by P’YONGYANG Foreign Ministry Office or MOSCOW Foreign Ministry Office.

Airlines:
During period Aug 49 - Jun 50, PW observed regular scheduled flights between P’YONGYANG and VLADIVOSTOK by the Korean-Russian Airline Co. Aircraft were Russian IL 12. The Company tried to run scheduled flights between P’YONGYANG and WONSAN and CH’ONGJIN and SINUIJU for the public. Cost of the flight between P’YONGYANG and WONSAN was 800 or 1,000 NK WON.

PsW in North KOREA: (as of 8 Jul 50)
PW observed approx 200 PsW wearing khaki uniforms at the West P’YONGYANG Grade School (881.7-1823). PW heard these PsW came from SEOUL three days earlier (5 Jul 50).
