2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was formerly in the ROK Army, but he was captured by the NK’s when his Bn CO defected in May 49.
PW hated that he was forced to join the NKA in Jul 49, deserted early part of Aug 50.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
12 Sep 46 - PW volunteered for the ROK Constabulary Force at CH’UNCH’ON (春川). Received basic training for approx 1½ months.
O/a 18 Dec 46 - PW was transferred to WONJU (原州).
1 Jul 48 - PW was promoted to Staff Sgt.
5 May 49 - The 2nd Bn (less 6th Co) crossed the 38° parallel to attack NK guard units. The CO Maj KANG T’AE MU was a traitor and he led his Bn into a trap. Approx 100 men were killed at a point 5 km S of INJE (麟蹄). Approx 100 men including PW were captured and the remaining men of the 2nd Bn manage to escape.
6 May 49 - PW was wounded in the right shoulder and was sent to a hospital in WONSAN.
O/a 12 May 49 - Transferred to the Ministry of Interior, Central Hospital in P'YONGYANG. They stayed in this hospital for about a month.
O/a 12 Jun 49 - Transferred to a Camp in ANJU (安州). There were approx 100 troops from the 2nd Bn, 8th Regt interned in the camp. MaJ KANG T'AE MU was. also interned in this camp. 1st Bn CO of the 8th Regt also defected at HWACH’ON (華川) with 300 men.
The name of the 1st Bn CO was Maj PYO, Mu Won (表武源). He and his 300 troops were also interned at ANJU.
The North Koreans did not call giem PW's. They were called “troops who escaped north” (越北軍). They received political indoctrination (2 hrs per day) for a month.
11 Jul 49 - Approx 400 men interned in this camp were forced to join the NKA. They received military training for a weak. The CHINNAMP'O (鎭南浦) 19th Independent Inf Bn was organized by these 400 men. The former 1st Bn CO Maj P’YO, Mu Won was designated as the 19th Ind Inf Bn CO. The former 2nd Bn CO Maj KANG T'ae Mu was transferred to the Ministry of Interior in P’YONGYANG, Maj PYO, Mu Won and Maj KANG T’ae Mu were both promoted to Lt Col's.
O/a 20 Jul 49 - 19th Ind Inf Bn was transferred to the No. 3 Infantry School in HOERYONG (會寧). They were separated from the students attending the Infantry School, but received same training. The 19th. Independent Inf Bn was redesignated as the 417th Unit, Ministy of Defense.
15 Sep 49 - PW was promoted to Sr Sgt (上士) and was designated as the ass't plt ldr of the 3rd Plt, 1st Co, 417th Unit. Lt Col P'YO, Mu Won was still the CO of the 417th Unit.
O/a 5 Jun 50 - The 417th Unit moved to MANP’OJIN (滿浦鎭). The 417th Unit was redesignated as the Border Guard Unit (designation unknown), Ministry of Interior.
5 Jul 50 - The Border Guard Unit moved to P’YONGYANG. Approx 150 men (ROK troops who were captured along the 38° parallel before this war) wer added to the Border Guard Unit. Total number of men approx 550. The Border Guard was divided into two Bns designated the 7th and 8th.
Lt Col P’YO, Mu Won took command of the 7th Bn and Lt Col KANG, T'ae Mu took command of the 8th.
6 Jul 50 - PW was commissioned Jr Lt (少尉) and took commander of the 2nd Plt, 2nd Co, 8th Border Guard Bn. The 8th Border Guard Bn departed P'YONGYANG for S by train.
11 Jul 50 - They reached HONGCH’ON via WONSAN, CH'ORWON (鐵原) and CH'UNCH'ON. The 7th Border Guard Bn remained at HONGCH'ON and trained approx 400 SK's. These 400 SK's were attached to the 8th Border Guard Bn in the latter part of Jul 50.
Jul 50 - The 8th Border Guard Bn moved to CH'UNGJU (忠州). PW heard that the 7th was at TANYANG (丹陽). Both were enlarged to Regts. Lt Col's KANG, T’ae Mu and P’YO Mu Won were both promoted to Col’s and took command.
Aug 50 - PW deserted from his unit when it was about to move to MUN’GYONG (聞慶).
