3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
8 Aug 50 - Inducted into the NKA at CH‘ONGJIN and immediately departed for NANAM. Commission Lt (中尉).
16 Aug 50 - Departed NANAM with two other medical officers.
21 Aug 50 - Arrived in SEOUL and stationed at SEVERENCE Hospital.
13 Sep 50 - Assigned to the 24th Field Hospital and departed SEOUL by train.
15 Sep 50 ~ Arrived in TAEJON and was immediately dispatched by truck to the Detached unit of the 24th Army Hospital in KUMCH’ON.
18 Sep 50 - The detached unit evacuated the patients by trucks sent from TAEJON and the hospital staff members walked.
23 Sep 50 - Arrived in TAEJON and remained 3 days waiting for orders.
28 Sep 50 - Unable to wait any longer, a group of twenty hospital staff members departed TAEJON with plans to proceed to SEOUL.
30 Sep 50 - At PUGANG-Ni, 15 members of the group entered the mountains but the 5 other members kept on the road and were captured by ROK Forces.

Unit Organization and Strength:
As of 18 Sep 50, the detached unit of the 24th Army Hospital was composed of 8 doctors and 13 nurses. Mission was to treat the wounded brought in from the various combat units and than transfer them on the first available transportation to the 24th Field Hospital in TAEJON.

Unit History:
PW heard that the 24th Field Hospital was activated in SEOUL during the month of Aug 50.

Disposition:
The 24th Field Hospital was located in TAEJON and PW heard that a large number of the bed patients were evacuated to SEOUL by train. He also heard 28 Sep 50, that the staff members of the hospital were remaining in TAEJON until the evacuation of the patients was completed.

Personalities:
The Chief of the detached unit of the 24th Field Hospital in KUMCH'ON was Capt (總尉) YANG, Chin O (陽振吳) (양진오).

Morale and Propaganda:
The morale of doctors and nurses was low because they were fully aware of the futility of the war. PW saw a US propaganda leaflet and a Safe Conduct Pass He states that it was very effective in inducing him, as well as some of his friends, to surrender to UN Forces without making further attempts to escape to the north.

4. GENERAL:
Effect of Air Attack on Food and Clothing Supplies:
Food rationing was not in effect for all civilians. People who were qualified to purchase food under the ration system were classified as follows:
Class 1 - Technicians and- Communist Party members.
Class 2 - Head of hospitals and schools.
Class 3 - Doctors and laborers employed by the government.
Class 4 - Students and clerks employed by the government.
Class 5 - Dependents of government employees.
Unrationed - Others.

The amount of rice ration per month ahd the official price of rice are as follows:
Class 1 - 25 kg - 300 WON
Class 2 - 20 kg - 250 WON
Class 3 - 18 kg - 200 WON
Class 4 - 15 kg - 120 WON
Class 5 - 8 kg - 80 WON
After the war started, the people were unable to receive the full amount of the rice ration because the transportation system was disrupted by air raids and provision warehouses were destroyed by repeated bombings.
As of Aug 50, the blackmarket price of rice was 60 WON per half quart.
PW was in Class 3 and received a 1 m x 5 m piece of white I cotton cloth per month under the ration system and paid 250 WON for iti. The blackmarket price for the same material was 250 WON for 1 m x 1 m piece.
Large quantities of inferior grade clothing material were imported from USSR, but the people were required to pay an exorbitant price for it.
