PW was cooperative but lacked technical information. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
1 Nov 48: PW volunteered and was inducted into the NKA at P’YONGYANG. He was attached to the 576th Security Regt in P’YONGYANG.
? Oct 49: Promoted to a Jr Sgt (下士) and transferred to the 582nd Ind Arty Regt in P’YONGYANG. Attached to the Regt’l Supply Section as a clerk.
5 Jan 50: Commissioned Jr Lt (少尉) and made requisition officer.
1 Jun 50: Promoted to Lt (中尉).
20 Jun 50: Departed P’YONGYANG by train.
24 Jun 50: Arrived in CH’ORWON.
26 Jun 50: Crossed the 38th parallel and engaged in light skirmishes.
Jun 50: 582nd Arty Regt reorganized and the three (3) artillery battalion were placed under the direct control of ⅠCorps Hq. The Regt CO acted as a liaison officer between Corps Hq and the three battalions. The Regt’l supply section was also reorganized and the PW was attached to the 3rd Bn, Supply section as a supply requisition officer.
20 Jul 50: ⅠCorps Supply Section was located in SEOUL and the 3rd Bn of the 582nd Ind Arty Regt was located in CH’ONAN. ⅠCorps Supply Section moved out of SEOUL and arrived in TAEJON. Remained there until the latter part of Sep 50.
20 Aug 50: The 3rd Arty Bn arrived in KOCH’ANG and remained for a period of one month.
15 Sep 50: PW heard that the 3rd Arty Bn started retreating north. Details unknown. PW lost his truck in an air attack at KUMSAN while on route from KOCH’ANG to TAEJON.
28 Sep 50: PW attempted to salvage the truck but gave up after observing all the other units starting a wild retreat to the north. He started out to the east with plans of escaping to the north following the range of mountains along the east coast.
2 Oct 50: PW arrived at CH’ONGSAN together with a group of 85 stragglers. Encountered a strong ROK force and surrendered.

Unit Organization and Strength:
Original organization and strength: The 582nd Ind Arty Regt Hq was composed of a administrative section, supply section, intendance section and a signal section. The field units of the 582nd Independence Arty Regt were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Arty Battalions and a command company. Each battalion was composed of three (3) batteries, liaison platoon and a ammunition platoon. Each battalion was composed of 400 men and the Regtl Hq was composed of 100 men. Total strength of the Regt was 1,300 men.

Last Known Composition of Unit:
As of 3 Sep 50, the total strength of the 3rd Bn of the 582nd Ind Arty Regt was 360 men. Further details unknown.

Equipment:
Each battalion of the 582nd Ind Arty Regt was composed of two batteries with 4 x 122mm M1931/37 guns and one battery with 4 x 122mm M1938 Howitzers. As of 3 Sep 50 PW heard that the 3rd Arty Bn of the 582nd Ind Arty Regt had lost two (2) 122mm M1931/37 guns from air raids in the KOCH’ANG Area. All guns were towed by tractors.
The 3rd Arty Bn possessed four (4) ammunition trucks and a tation truck. Each ammo truck transported a load of seventy (70) 122mm artillery or howitzer shells. Due to shortage of ammo trucks, PW hauled 40 shells on his ration truck from TAEJON to ANUI on 27 Aug 50. Pw was unable to give any technical details of the guns.

Unit History:
The 582nd Ind Arty Regt was activated in P’YONGYANG during Jun 49 and it was immediately reorganized at the start of war. The three (3) battalions were separated and they operated independently under the direct control of I Corps as Corp artillery. Further details unknown.

Personalities:
The 582nd Ind Arty Regt CO was Col (대좌) LEE, Kwan Ho (이관호).

Morale and Propaganda:
PW believes that morale of the troops were low because they were constantly harassed by aircraft and were driven into hiding. He also believes they were unable to exert their full fire power against the enemy due to lack of regular ammunition supply from the Corps supply depot. PW never observed a US propaganda leaflet.

The standard ration per day per man was:

Tobacco - NCO’s and officers received 20 cigarettes and the EM received 10 twenty gram packages of pipe tobacco per month. After the war started, the regtl supply section was unable to issue the normal food allowance to the battalions. They issued only what was available on hand and the PW normally delivered only rice to the battalion supply from the Corps Hqs. The battalion supply section was responsible for foraging the necessary balance of the food ration.
