1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative. He surrendered to the ROK Forces with a Safe Conduct Pass. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
28 Mar 48 - PW was conscripted into the NKA at HAMHUNG and received a month of basic infantry training. He was then attached to the RR Guard Unit in SINGU-Ri (新九里).
2 Jan 49 - PW served as an asst squad leader for a period of 8 months with a rank of Jr Sgt (下士). PW was transferred to HAMHUNG.
23 Mar 49 - The RR Guard Unit in HAMHUNG was reorganized and designated as the 3159th RR Guard Div. PW was promoted ot Sgt (中士) and became a squad leader.
9 May 50 - PW was transferred to MARAM (마람). He was again promoted and became a Sr Sgt (上士).
12 Jul 50 - PW arrived in P;YONGYANG and was given a rank of Jr Lt (少尉). He was immediately assigned to the 4th Plt, 3rd Co, 11th Bn 2159 RR Guard Unit, as a platoon leader.
14 Jul 50 - The 4th Plt (42 men), 3rd Co, 11th Bn, 3159th RR Guard Div departed P’YONGYANG, by train, but started marching after detraining at SEOUL.
4 Aug 50 - Arrived in NONSAN and was immediately ordered to guard the RR bridge at NONSAN.
28 Sep 50 - The 4th Plt received orders from the 11th Bn, 3159th RR Guard Div to proceed to TAEJON Area for combat duty. They immediately departed NONSAN and joined the 3rd Co, 11th Bn, 3159th Guard Div at TUGYE (豆溪). However, the 3rd Co CO ordered the company to disband and required the troops to form groups of 3 men each. They were told to seek disguises and proceed to North KOREA.
29 Sep 50 - PW entered the mountains south of TAEJON and proceeded north.
2 Oct 50 - PW hid in the mountains near POUN for 3 days and finally descended into POUN with a Safe Conduct Pass and surrender to a ROK unit.

Unit Organization and Strength:
Original Organization and Strength: The 3159th RR guard Div was composed of 12 battalions. Each battalion was composed of 4 companies and each company of 4 platoons. All platoons were composed of 4 squads of 10 men each. 42 men in a Plt, 176 men in a company.
PW believes that the total strength of the 3159th RR guard Div was more than 10,000 men.
Last Known Composition of Unit. The original organization of the 3159th RR Guard Div was never changed. As of 28 Sep 50, the 3rd Co, 11th Bn had its full strength of 176 men. However it was rendered ineffective due to the scattering of all the troops.

Unit History:
The RR Guard Units in North KOREA were combined and the 3159th RR Guard Div was activated 23 Mar 49. This Div was the only RR guard Div in the NKA. The Code No of the 3159th RR Guard Div was 10.

Dispositions:
The 3159th-RR Security Guard Div Hqs was located in SEOUL. The disposition of Bn CP’s were as follows:
1st Bn - P’YONGYANG
2nd Bn - SUNCH’ON
3rd Bn - WONSAN
4th Bn - CH’ONGJIN
5th Bn - SEOUL
6th Bn - YONGDUNGP’O
7th Bn - u/k
8th Bn - TAEJON
9th Bn - T’AEGU (tentative)
10th Bn - u/k
11th Bn - I-Ri ( )
12th Bn - PUSAN (tentative)

Intentions:
PW heard that the 11th Bn which was stationed in I-Ri was disbanded with ordered to infiltrate through the enemy line and proceed back to North KOREA.

PW heard that LEE had been and active member of a Partisan (빨치산) Unit in MANCHURIA.
Morale and Propaganda:
The morale of the troops was excellent and they were eager to engage in combat despite the fact that majority of the troops were from S. KOREA Volunteer Corps. PW believes that all personnel in the unit possessed a spontaneous will to fight.
PW obtained a Safe Conduct Pass on the mountain near POUN and he claims that in greatly influenced him in deciding to surrender to the ROK Forces.
