Organization and Strength:
The 556th Unit wore NKA uniforms but came directly under the Ministry of Interior. The 556th Unit Hq was located in SEOUL as of 11 Sep 50. The 556th Unit Hq was composed of 10 guard platoons, numbered from one to ten respectively. As of 11 Sep 50 each
platoon had 40 men. The function of each plt was to control traffic and guard roads in occupied areas. Plts were deployed throughout South KOREA. The 1st platoon was in SEOUL, the 4th Plt in CHINJU, the 5th Plt in SANCH’ONG (山淸) and the 10th in TAEJON.

Equipment:
Each rifleman had either a US (M1917), US (M1903) or a Japanese M-99 rifle. Each rifleman had 100-200 rounds of M-99 ammunition, but no US 30 caliber ammunition was available. Consequently men who carried US M1917 or M1903 carried Japanese M-99 ammunition although the ammunition would not fit their rifle.

When the PW’s platoon dispersed at TAEJON o/a 26 Sep 50, the platoon leader told the men to assemble in KUMHWA in N. KOREA as soon as possible.
