ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1772　10 October 1950

FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 1024)　30 September 1950

Cooperative, Information seems to be reliable and PW was in a position to observe his unit’s activities because of his rank and position. Recommend interrogation for details about the NKPA medical organization and equipment.

b. Equipment consisted of surgical instruments, bandages, and medicine only. Originally the hospital had 150 cots, but no longer has any. Medical supplies were plentiful and included large quantities of US drugs until 27 Sep 50. Equipment was abandoned at TAEJON when the city was heavily bombed by aircraft and shelled by artillery (the hospital buildings were ant damaged at that time, however). Wounded personnel who were unable to walk were left in the TAEJON City Hospital which the NKPA 40th Field Hospital had used until its personnel fled from TAEJON. Originally the 40th Filed Hospital had 8 vehicles (6 x 2½ ton trucks and 2x ambulances). Currently it had only 3 vehicles (1 “jeep” and 2 x 2½ ton trucks).

Inducted on 15 Jun 50, at PYONGYANG. Joined the 40th Field Hospital when it was activated at PYONGYANG on 19 June 50.

Departed from PYONGYANG on 19 June 50, with the entire personnel of the 40th Field Hospital, and traveled to TAEJON, finally reaching latter place 26 Sep 50.

ON 27 Sep 50, the Commanding Officer, Labor Party (Communist) officials and Head Nurse of the 40th Field Hospital took the hospital’s only 2 vehicles with gasoline and fled from TAEJON, leaving PW behind. PW arrived at CHONGJU on 281600 K Sep 50 where he immediately surrendered to US soldiers occupying the city.

Food was confiscated from the civilian residents of every large town that the 40th Field Hospital entered.

Observed 4 x tanks (type unknown) proceeding through TAEJON toward YUSONG on 27 Sep 50. Tanks were towing light artillery pieces.

Observed approx 40 x 2½ ton trucks, ten (10) “jeeps,” 2 x horse-carts (loaded with NKPA personnel) proceeding through TAEJON toward YUSONG on 27 Sep 50. PW believes the vehicles were going to CHOCH’IWON.

None of the doctors in the 40th Field Hospital were pro-communist, and all were unhappy because of NKPA aggression, but they cooperated with the NKPA because the Cultural Officer and other NK Labor (Communist) Party representatives were constantly watching them.

Observed one (1) US PW at CHONGJU o/a 2 Aug 50, and two (2) at KORYONG o/a 20 Aug 50.
