This PW, apparently of average intelligence considering his background, appeared stupid at times during the interrogation. He inquired whether or not he was entitled to preferential treatment because he had deserted his unit.

28 Sep 50 - PW with three others, including two medical officers, deserted.
1 Oct 50 - After three days in the hills, the men notified local police of their desire to surrender. Police contacted American troops.

Ratio of Death to Wounded: (10th Div)
Between 20 Aug 50 and 20 Sep 50, PW estimated the killed and missing in action 60-70% of an original total of 14/15,000. He arrived at this conclusion on the basis of hearsay that, as of 25 Sep 50, the 10th Div had 3,000 to 4,000 men remaining. During the period 20 Aug 50 to 20 Sep 50, the PW estimated the number of casualties treated at the Div Hospital at 1,500. (Only 20 died of wounds).

Equipment:
The 10th Div Hospital was completely equipped to carry out major operations. The surgical instruments were all Soviet make and were far inferior to American or Japanese instruments. There were innumerable cases when the scissors, syringe, saws and the like snapped when first used.
Most medicines such as iodine, mercurochrome, disinfectant etc. were in limited quantity. These were originally from the former Jap KWANGTUNG Army supply. Sulphamine (50 grams per two weeks) was either of American or Soviet manufacture, and Penicillin (40 to 50 x 200,000 unit supply) was American.

Composition of 10th Div Hospital:
Chief Surgeon - Commanding Officer
Surgeon - PW and a former medical student.
Physician - a former student (undergraduate)
Classification Section - one officer
Dressing Station - one officer who had just graduated college.
Health officer - 2 officers.
Nurses - 9
Corpsmen - 10 EM
Stretcher Bearers - 8
Plus about 10 EM for miscellaneous duties.

Function of the 10th Div Hospital:
Hospital performed all major operations, including amputations, if time permitted. Whenever the influx of casualties was heavy, each patient was examined and treated according to the urgency of his case. All others were sent to the Field Hospital after receiving first aid or change of dressing (in the event they received first aid at regimental first aid station).
PW, the only surgeon at the Div Hospital, performed on the average of four to five operations daily, a total of seven or eight at the most.
