ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1703 9 October 1950

(NOTE: The following interrogations of NKPA PWs were made at TOKYO ARMY HOSPITAL, TOKYO, on 7 October 50. PW's listed comprise total number hospitalized at this hospital)

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was extremely co-operative, but of limited intelligence. He could give no information of either tactical or strategic value.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
Inducted into the 15th Regiment in PYONGYANG on 12 Apr 50. Participated in action with the regiment at a number of unknown places until he was seriously wounded in both legs on a hill near MASAN. Picked up by American soldiers and evacuated to TOKYO where one leg was amputated.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW was of the opinion that the NKPA should, surrender and permit the unification of KOREA without the interference of RUSSIA. He had no political convictions, but was convinced that the North Korean authorities were wrong because his officers had lied about the treatment prisoners would receive from the Americans. He had expected to have his nose and ears cut off on capture and still appeared somewhat surprised to find himself in a US hospital receiving the same type of treatment as US wounded.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was a farmer with no formal education. He was of below average intelligence and, although he had been in the army for one year, had practically no information of tactical or strategic value.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
Conscripted into the NKPA, October 1949. Proceeded with his unit from SEOUL, through TAEJON, was wounded and captured by US troops in the NAKTONG River area on 17 Jul 50 after having been in hiding for two days. Evacuated to TOKYO for medical treatment.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW hoped that the UN forces would drive KIM IL SUNG out of KOREA. He was not a member of the Labor Party and was not sympathetic towards its aims since under its aegis North KOREA had become a difficult place in which to make a living.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared sincere in answering questions, which he did to the best of his limited ability. He had had no formal education, and possessed no tactical or strategic information of immediate value.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
PW was inducted into the 2nd Regt at NONGAN PO on 29 Sep 50. Early in August his company moved to KUNSON via SEOUL, arriving there on 2 Sep 50. Wounded and captured on 22 Sep 50 and evacuated to TOKYO for medical treatment.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW had no party affiliations, and was neutral in his attitude towards the Labor Party. He was not well disposed towards the NKPA since, on his conscription, he was told that he would only have to take 8 month's training and that his family would be provided for during his absence. This promise was not kept.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was co-operative, but possessed no new information of interest.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
Inducted 25 Jul 50, received no training and was moved directly into the combat area, where he was wounded and captured by us forces.
PW was evacuated to TOKYO for medical treatment.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW was told on induction that he would be trained for 40 days, then returned to his home. When he departed for military service, less than half of the people in his tow were opposed to the Labor Party, since life was actually easier than it had been in 1945 and the NK police, though bad, were infinitely better than the Japanese police had been.

2. ASSESSMENT:
FW has had no formal education and was a farmer in civilian life. He was co-operative, but had no information of tactical or strategic value.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
Inducted on 19 Apr 50 and shipped directly to PYONG YANG. Departed PYONG YANG on 26 Jul. 50 with the 10th Div, passing through SEOUL and TAEJON to the NAKTONG area. PW was wounded, picked up by US soldiers and evacuated via PUSAN to TOKYO.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW's home having been near the 38th parallel, he knew something of conditions in the ROK. He did not believe propaganda disseminated by the North Korean government and was strongly anti-Labor Party because of the hard living conditions and the harshness of government and Party officials.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was admitted to the TOKYO ARMY HOSPITAL on 5 Oct 50. He was seriously burned on the face and arms and was barely able to talk. The above information was obtained at the cost of considerable pain. Further interrogation was impossible.

2. ASSESSMENT:
Interrogee claimed to be a ROK marine, moved from an ROK ward in the TOKYO ARY HOSPITAL by error. He was wounded in crossing the HAN River about 30 Sep 50 after having participated in the INCHON landing with US forces. NKPA PWs in his ward stated to interrogators that he was a South Korean. This information was given to the Duty Officer, TOKYO ARMY HOSPITAL by the interrogator on 7 Oct 50. Informant could give no information on the NKPA.
