ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1698　9 October 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADV ECH ATIS - 0007)　7 October 1950

PW physical condition was good. Graduated Higher Primary School at SEOUL then went to SAGA KEN, KYUSHU and worked as an automobile mechanic. Informant was cooperative and information seems reliable.

Informant heard that there was an American PW camp in W PYONGYANG.

Informant heard that there was a major NK Army Headquarters in PYONGYANG and a divisional headquarters in CHONGJIN and a tank div hq in CHORWON.

A supply dump is located in MOLANBO park, PYONGYANG. Informant observed this supply dump when he drove the trucks that came in to W PYONGYANG Sta from 23 Jul to 23 Aug 50. These trucks were all Russian made.

Location: Supply dump is located 1.50 km SW of PYONGYANG, 2½ km SE of the TAEDONG River, and 6½ km S of the TAEDONG bridge.

Area: Park is very large, but exact dimensions are unknown. The supply dump are was guarded by soldiers with rifles.

There was a telephone connected to PYONGYANG. There were about 15 AA guns, 40mm, at the top of MOLANBO Mt camouflaged by trees, an average of 400 trucks and jeeps, about 20 ambulances all American made, army uniforms, ammo for rifles, grenades, heavy and light MG, and shells for AA guns. There were about 300 soldiers here. The air raid shelters containing the ammo and weapons were quite large.

The 8th Route Army now called People’s Liberation Army is scattered throughout MANCHURIA and CHINA. The PW heard while he was in PEKING from an officer of the 4th Co of the 3rd Regt (see sketch) that there are 7,500,000 soldiers in the 8th Route Army and that most of these soldiers of 8th Route Army were gathered along the border of MANCHURIA and KOREA.

Informant heard a rumor that these soldiers were stationed here to guard MANCHURIA from invading forces. Another place where the 8th Route Army is gathered is at NANKING. They have the naval air and army hq here. At the SE tip of CHINA there are also 8th Route Army soldiers.

Informant heard from an officer called Captain WAN of the 4th Co of the 3rd Vehicle Regt that these soldiers will invade FORMOSA sometime this year. Heard also that they will invade the SW part of CHINA after invading FORMOSA because this part will be easy because it is on the continent. This was all heard in May of this year. The N CHINA district army hq was in PEKING.

The forces that are capable of reinforcing NKPA are the forces on the border of MANCHURIA and N KOREA.

Informant observed this headquarters in Jun 50 when he was stationed in PEKING as a driver of the 3rd Vehicle Regt of the N China District Army.

Location: This hq was located in Central PEKING about 7 km NW of the Peking RR Sta, 6 km N of the Central People’s Gov’t and 5.50 km N of the broadcasting sta.

This headquarters had a 6 ft cement wall around it and was painted black. The entrance to this Hq was guarded by six soldiers with automatic rifles. Electric lines and telephone lines were seen leading from this Hq. Informant states there were over 1,000 personnel here. The men here were from 2nd Lts up to a Lt Gen. (Names unk)

Informant observed this building while he was in PEKING as a driver for the 3rd Vehicle Regt of the N China District Army during Jun 50.

Location: This place was located in Central PEKING, 6 km S of the N China District Army Hq and 1 km NW of the Peking RR Sta. There was a stone wall about 15 ft high all around it. There were two soldiers guarding the entrance with automatic rifles. There were some officers of the 8th Route Army and civilians working here.

4th and 5th companies each had 50 x 3 to 4 ton trucks, all Russian made.
