ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1669　5 October 1950

FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 1009)　29 September 1950

PW seems to be sincere. Information seems to be reliable.

On 24 Sep 50, PW was ordered to report to YECH’ON, where 50,000 troops of the Army Front Hq were regrouping to retreat to North Korea.

According to the plan of withdrawal, the troops were to march form YECH’ON to YONGJU, TANYANG, CHECH’ON, KANGNUNG, YANYANG to KANSONG.

The troops were ordered to avoid the highways because of US aircraft. They were armed with small arms only. Artillery and other heavy weapons were discarded because of lack of transportation.

PW believes that a large percentage of the troops would not be able to make the retreat, because food was inadequate.

Inducted 12 Aug 49, at YANGYANG, and assigned to the 8th Bn of 31st Unit (1st Training Rest), On 24 Oct 49, PW was commissioned a 2nd Lt.

Between Oct 49, and 28 Jun 50, the 31st Unit (1st Training Regt) was trained in preparation for war. There were eight Bns.

On 20 Jun 50, marched to KANGNUNG where the 31st Unit was deactivated to form the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regts of the 8th Division. Departed KANGNUNG 2 Jul 50, arrived PONGSAN, 24 Sep 50.

On 25 Sep 50, PW and ten (10) others were taken prisoner while attempting to go to YECH’ON.

On 26 Jul 50, the 1st Regt of the 8th Division received 200 replacements. The replacements were North Koreans, who were conscripted from the HOERYONG region.

The replacements prior to joining the Regt received little or no training. Weapons were issued to the replacements only when available.

The 2nd Corps central ammo distribution point was located 16 kms north of ANDONG, at ONGJIN.

On 17 Sep 50, the 2nd Corps ammo supply was completely cut off.

Food supplies were also stored at ONGJIN.

Between 17 Sep 50, until taken PW (25 Sep 50), the informant received 800 grams of rice.

The 2nd Corps lost all of its tanks and self-propelled guns.

During the hasty retreat of the 2nd Corps, most of the artillery pieces were abandoned because of the lack of vehicles to haul them.
