FIELD REPORT (521 - MISD - 0107) 2 October 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Subject appeared to be very cooperative.
Length of service - 3 months 10 days
physical condition - Good
Information - Reliable

3. MILITARY HISTORY:
PW inducted on 10 Jun 50 at WONSAN (元山) and attached to the 76th Ind Regt. Subject received about 30 days of military training. The above unit was organized on 10 Jun 50 at WONSAN (元山).
On 5 Jul 50, subject was appointed 2nd Lt in the Ind Sig Co as a Pltn Ldr.
On 17 Sep 50, the entire 76th Ind Regt departed WONSAN by rail and arrived at SEOUL on the 19 Sep 50.
On 22 Sep 50, subject and 5 men were sent to CHORWON (鐵原) to receive additional communication equipment (telephones and wires only).
When subject returned to SEOUL on 25 Sep 50, the whereabouts of the 76th Ind Regt was unknown.
Subject hid in the mountains for 2 days and entered SEOUL to obtain food and was captured 29 Sep 50 by the 1st Marine Div.

4. FOREIGN ELEMENTS:
On 5 Sep 50, PW observed a Russian Maj at the 42nd Div Hq’s building in WONSAN.

5. WEAPONS AND PERSONNEL:
The 76th Ind Regt was composed of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Bns, Ind 122 MM Mortar Co (equipped with 6/122 MM mortars), Ind 76 MM Arty Co (equipped with 4/76 MM guns), Ind 45 MM Arty Co (equipped with 4/45 MM guns), and the Ind Communication Co.
Each of the Bns was composed of 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and a HMG Co. Each HMG Co had 8 HMGs. At the time the 76th Ind Regt left WONSAN, each man was issued a rifle and 70 rds of ammo.
Strength of the 76th Ind Regt was estimated to be approx 2,000 men. The Regt was commanded by Col IM, CHON HA, believed to have escaped from SEOUL to WONSAN.
On 5 Sep 50, the 42nd Inf Div was organized at WONSAN. It was composed of the 76th Regt and the 96th Regt. At the time the 76th Regt left WONSAN, (17 Sep 50) the 42nd Div Hq and the 96th Regt remained in WONSAN.
Strength of the 42nd Div was estimated to be approx 3,000 men (76th Regt - 2,000 and 96th Regt - 1,000).
Prior to departure from WONSAN, PW heard that the 96th Regt had plans to draft approx 3,000 employees of the BUNSEN LEAD REFINERY located at BUNSEN (12 km N of WONSAN).
The 42nd Div CO was a Maj Gen (name unknown).
At the time PW departed WONSAN, he observed a Marine Div of approx 7,000 men stationed in WONSAN. PW stated that the above Div was engaged in the construction of a coastal fortification along the WONSAN harbor shore. PW observed about 6/122 MM arty guns and 4/45 MM arty gun emplacements already completed. (See sketch)

6. CONDITION OF ROADS AND RR
The main road between WONSAN and SEOUL was a dirt road about 6 m wide. When PW last travelled this road on 17 Sep 50, the road was in fairly good condition with the exception of a few destroyed bridges .
The railroad was in operation.

7. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Subject heard that the YODO, SINDO, UNGDO and all other small islands in the WONSAN Bay were fortified with arty guns,
Subject stated that the fluctuation of tide in the WONSAN Bay could hardly be noticed and that large ships could enter the port at any time of the day.

Airfield:
The WONSAN Airfield was located about 1 km E of WONSAN. Subject observed it on 15 sep 50 while with the 76th Ind Regt. One concrete runway approx 500 m long and 70 m wide was observed. There were three (3) concrete hangars built into a side hill on the E edge of the field. These hangars measured approx 25 m in width, 15 m in height and 30 m in length. Each of these hangars were capable of accommodating two (2) fighter planes. (Obs during Jap Army occupation.)
About ten (10) Russian made fighter planes were observed on the field during Jul and Aug 50, however, no planes were seen during Sep 50.
At the time subject observed the field, the concrete runway was severely damaged and the three (3) hangars had been completely demolished.
He heard that the 3rd Bn of the 76th Regt had been stationed in the hangars and about 250 men were killed during the air raids.
