2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and very intelligent. Talked freely.
Length of service - 70 days.
Physical condition - Good.
Education - College (Economics) 3 yrs.
Reliability - Good.

3. MILITARY HISTORY:
14 Jul 50 Conscripted into NKPA at PYONGYANG (平壤) and attached to the 17th Div, HQ, Finance Section. Appointed Jr Lt because of subjects educational background.
19 Aug 50 Tank Bns of 1st and 2nd Regts of the 17th Div and one (1) infantry regiment with 40/T-34 tanks and approx 500 infantry men accompanied by the Div CO and his staff left PYONGYANG with TAEGU (大邱) as their destination.
6 Sep 50 One (1) infantry regiment (1,500 men), the 2nd Bn of the 2nd Inf Regt, and a small unit of Div HQs (total of 2,600 men) left PYONGYANG. (by rail)
15 Sep 50 Units arrived SEOUL.
15 Sep 50 Above units departed by trucks for YANGPYONG (陽平) at night but after reaching this town, immediately returned to SEOUL.
16 Sep 50 Arrived SEOUL.
26 Sep 50 Subject heard that the UN Forces were within SEOUL. He then deserted, changed to civilian clothes and hid in the mountains. He was arrested by SK Police and turned over to the 1st Marine MP Unit.

Prior to PW’s desertion (26 Sep 50), the units of the 17th Div consisted of the following:

5. PERSONALITIES:
CHONG, Chol Wo (鄭哲禹) (정찬선) Maj Gen, 32, Div CG. Last observed on 19 Aug 50, prior to his departure for TAEGU.

6. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The 1st Inf Regt of the 17th Div arrived at PYONGYANG from MANCHURIA on 9 Aug 50. PW states that they were attached to the 8th Route CCF prior to arrival.
Their morale was high.
