Death and wounded rate in percentages:
According to hearsay, 80% of the original personnel of the 7th Div had become casualties prior to the battle of AN’GANG-NI (安康里) (The PW could not give an estimate of the ratio of dead to wounded). The above excludes casualties among replacements.

Death among Wounded:
The PW would not even attempt to estimate the death rate among the wounded for the entire Div. However, he estimated the death rate of wounded personnel who had been treated by his own section comprised of six surgeons at 5 to 10% of the total wounded. He believed that this death rate from wounded was among the lowest. He further stated that about 20% of the wounded sent to the rear field hospital had very slight chances of living.

Method used in treating wounded:
All those with light wounds, including those with clean bullet holes in arm or leg or small pieces of shrapnel that were difficult to locate were immediately sent to the rear field hospital after dressing with mercurochrome or iodine. All those with serious stomach or head injuries and those who required bone setting were treated immediately at this hospital. Occasionally amputations were performed when absolutely necessary. In the case of open wounds of a serious nature, the following was the usual procedure: first iodine was applied to the wound which was then washed with 70% alcohol, local anesthetic (in most cases 0.5 novocaine, occasionally 0.5 cocaine) was given. The operation performed (never stitched together), iodine was applied again and then finally sulphamin applied (always available). After treatment, the patient was sent to a field hospital. Up until the PW’s time of capture, all the above medicinals were readily available.

Last known composition of 7th Div Hospital:
As of 24 Sep 50 the total personnel strength was 200, as follows: 6 surgeons, 6 physicians, 20 to 30 female nurses, 25 aidemen and the balance were clerks, stretcher bearers, cooks, etc.

Equipment:
This unit had three trucks, only one having the Red Cross marking for transportating casualties. Up to late Jul 50 the Div Hospital was equipped with enough surgical instruments to perform practically all major operations.

Intentions of 7th Div Hqs:
Heard on 25 Sep 50 that the 7th Div will prepare defenses at WONJU (原州).
