ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1651　4 October 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 1001)　1 October 1950

PW cooperative, but information lacking in spite of his rank and military background. Seemed to be of average intelligence. Not recommended for further interrogation.

26 Aug 49: Inducted at KANSONG (杆城). Received 3 months basic training. Assigned 1st Infantry Brigade. The 1st Brigade later was enlarged into the 8th Div.

1 Sep 50: The 8th Div was in the vicinity of UISONG. PW’s 2nd Bn was at a point 4 km S of UISONG.

o/a 6 Sep 50: Arrived in UIHUNG. The 3rd Regt was on the right flank and the 2nd Regt on the left flank.

o/a 15 Sep 50: The 8th Div was on the defensive for one week then withdrew to a point 8 km N of UISONG. The 8th Div was to reassemble here, but only about 3,000 men from the 8th Div arrived. The division, regimental and battalion officers then deserted their units. The 8th Div became disorganized and retreated in disorder.

o/a 22 Sep 50: PW’s company, which had only 25 troops at that time, arrived at a point 12 km SE of ANDONG.

o/a 25 Sep 50: PW arrived at a point 8 km SE of YECH’ON (醴泉), Here the company commander told the troops that they had no place to go, so it was best of PW's company surrendered to the ROK troops.

As of 15 Sep 50 the 8th Div had about 3,000 men and was badly disorganized since the officers had deserted. PW's company had no objective after the disorganization of the Div and headed aimlessly N to avoid the advancing ROK Army.

As of 15 Sep 50 the 1st Bn had the following equipment:

3 x 82mm Howitzers with about 15 rounds

3 x HMG with 7 cases of ammunition. Each case containad 250 rounds

2 x LMG

The 8th Div had no food on hand.

The 8th Div was to pass through ANDONG, during their retreat, but PW did not know how far N they were to retreat. However, the Div was disorganized before an orderly withdrawal could bo affected.

Troops of the 8th Div are presently in disorganized groups and have lost all confidence, since their officers deserted them. Believes they have lost their will to fight and would easily surrender. In spite of the NKPA’s counter-propaganda to the troops, PW believes all troops presently believe UN propaganda leaflets.
