3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
PW volunteered for Security Guard Unit from 2 Feb 50 to 5 Jul 50. he was then assigned to the 8th Div, 1st Regt, 2nd Bn, Mortar Co 3rd Plt at KANGNUNG (江陵) as a squad leader with the rank of Sgt (中士).
1 Sep 50 - PW’s unit was located 5km S of UISONG.
6 Sep 50 - PW was promoted to Jr Lt (少尉) and became platoon leader of 3rd Plt, Mortar Co, 2nd Bn, 1st Regt, 8th Div. The 3rd Plt was assigned to act as a guard unit for the 2nd Bn CP.
22 Sep 50 - The 8th Div which was deployed in the general area 8km S of UISONG, started a general withdrawal towards UISONG when the ROK Forces started their offensive.
23 Sep 50 - The 8th Div retreated to a mountain 3km W of UISONG and the PW heard that they were surrounded by ROK Forces. Under cover of darkness, the 8th Div CG and all the remaining CO’s of the regiments, battalions and companies disappeared.
24 Sep 50 - The 8th Div became disorganized. PW became separated from his unit and surrendered to the ROK troops.

Last Known Composition of Unit:
The known strength cf the 8th Div as of 22 Sep 50, is as follows:
1st Regt - 260 men
2nd Bn - 120 men
Mortar Co - 40 men (27 replacements)
3rd Plt - 9 men (5 replacements)

Equipment:
The Mortar Co had 3 x 82-mm Mortars but no ammunition (as of 22 Sep 50). All men were armed with rifles and 40-70 rounds of ammunition.
PW saw 2 x HMG and 8 x LMG in the 2nd Bn and approximately 200 rounds for each gun (as of 22 Sep 50).

Intentions:
PW heard that the 8th Div was ordered to retreat to ANDONG. However, they were surrounded west of UlSONG and PW believes that the major force of the 8th Div was either captured or wiped out. Even if elements escaped they are no longer an effective combat force.

Personalities:
8th Div CG: Maj Gen (小將) O, Paek Yong (吳白龍)
Mortar Co CO: Sr Lt (大尉) HO, Min Sop (許민섭)

Morale and Propaganda:
Majority of the replacements were from the Volunteer Corps and they had no will to fight.
PW read three types of US propaganda leaflets near UISONG. He allowed all the men in his platoon to read the leaflets which carried news of the INCH’ON Landing and treatment of PWs. PW believes that the propaganda leaflets were very effective in inducing the troops to think about surrendering to the ROK Forces.

For the Commanding Officer:

WEELDREYER
