3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
15 Mar 46 : PW volunteered into CCF at YENCHI (延吉), MANCHURIA. Attended military government college of CCF for officers in YENCHI (延吉) until 24 Aug 48. Did not pass officers examination but, was promoted to M/Sgt.
24 Aug 48 : PW was transferred to KILIN (吉林) Army District and assigned to the CCF Security Regt, 3rd Co as mess steward.
1 Jan 49 : Transferred to 491st Regt, Security Co, 164th Div in CH'IANG CHUN (長春) Capital City of MANCHURIA. PW's Div, consisted of Chinese and Koreans and strongly believed in Communist ideals. Koreans in Div numbered 7,000-8,000. Chinese in Div - 1,500-2,000. Highest ranking Korean officer was a Maj Gen. Highest ranking Chinese officer was a Lt Gen (CG). Korean Maj Gen was LEE Tok San, age 45 and the Chinese General was WANG (fnu), age 35.
24 Jul 49 : The 164th Div transferred all Chinese personnel including the CG to another unit and Korean personnel under the command of the Korean Gen LEE Tok San were transferred to NANAM (羅南), KOREA (7500-8000 men). Equipment brought from GCF in 491st Regt, 164th Div as follows:

9 x US submachine guns, Calibro 30
9 x US BAR's
US Browning HMG, Calibro 30 (Number Unknown)
9 x 60mm Japanese mortars
4 x US 45mm AT guns

The 164th Div was redesignated as 5th Div, NKPA. In NANAM, PW was assigned as Chief Steward of 11th Regt'l mess, feeding 2,800 at each meal.

18 Jun 50 : 10th Regt, 5th Div departed NANAM.
19 Jun 50 : 11th Regt, 2,800 men departed NANAM (12th and Arty Regt 5th Div to follow 20 Jun 50) by rail, arrived YANGYANG (襄陽) 23 Jun 50.
23 Jun 50 : Regt departed YANGYANG marched, crossed the 38˚ parallel 26 Jun 50 and arrived KANGNUNG (江陵) o/a 28 Jun 50. Observed 10th Regt, 5th Div engaged in battle with ROKA. When ROKA retreated further south the 10th Regt moved on in pursuit. 11th Regt, occupied KANGNUNG.
29 Jun 50 : 11th Regt departed KANGNUNG marched and arrived YONGWOL (寧越) 1 Jul 50. 10th Regt occupied CHECH'ON (堤川).
3 Jul 50 : Supply Co, departed YONGWOL (寧越) arrived P'OHANG-DONG 1 Sep 50 via SANCH'OK (三陟), IMWONJIN (臨院津), ULCHIN (蔚珍), P'YONGHAE-RI (平海里), YONGHAE (寧海), YONDOK (寧德), CHANGSA DONG (長沙洞), CHONGHA (淸河) & HUNGHAE (興海). Hearsay - The 7th Div captured ANDONG (安東), CHONGSONG (靑松) Aug 50.
15 Aug 50 : At YONGDOK 5th Div had lost about 6000 men and 20% of its equipment. Received about 5,000 replacements who were untrained. Replacements were from South KOREA.
1 Sep 50 : At P'OHANG-DONG losses of 11th Regt were 1,500 men and 50% of equipment. Received 1,000 replacements.
22 Sep 50 : ROK forces broke through 11th Regt defense lines. Retreated to YONGDOK where shelled by naval guns. Losses 800 men and all equipment. Retreated to YONGYANG, captured by ROK troops with 8 other men in unit - 1 officer, Co CO.

Daily diet per man in 11th Regt, 5th Div at NANAM Training Area:
EM - 100 grams of beef or pork, Officers - 150 grams
800 grams of rice
150 grams of fish
600 grams vegetables
30 grams salt
20 grams oil (Sesame)
20 grams Soya Sauce
40 grams miso
100 grams Soya Bean Cabe
3 grams ground chili pepper
5 grams garlic 20 grams sugar

Battle field diet is the same as above when supplies are available. During the latter part of Jul 50 to time of capture, daily diet dropped 3/4 of above daily diet prescribed, per meal. There is no special training for cooks. All cooks in the 11th Regt, 5th Div were former cooks in restaurants. To feed 3,000 men, it requires 7 chief cooks and 30 helpers. 1 officer and 1 NCO as mess stewards. Rank of officer was Capt and the rank of mess steward M/Sgt. Cook's rank was Pvt.
Food in Regt was cooked in large Korean pots capable of providing enough food to feed 50 men. Food cooked on gas stoves. 29 stoves are required to cook for one meal for one Regt. In the fields rice is cooked in large Korean pots by placing 3 large rocks in triangular fashion so that when they have to pull out all they carry is the stove, No other method of cooking.
