Disposition:
Div Arty Regt was completely disorganized on 24 Sep 50 during an intense shelling. PW observed the Regt CO leave his unit 8 km N of ANDONG because of the intensity of the shelling. After his departure, all of the men scattered on their own. Div Med section and Sig Bn were enroute to YONGJU.

Morale:
The men felt that the NKPA was not an efficient combat force because of the constant defeats it had suffered in the past month. The constant air attacks and artillery fire had unnerved most of the men and the slightest shelling scattered them. PW noticed that with the exception of the cultural officers who still maintained that victory would ultimately be on their side, the majority of the unit commanders had lost all leadership necessary to hold their men together. This was very obvious when PW’s unit became disorganized 24 Sep 50. The men did not care to fight any longer and the majority of them had discarded their weapons. They were afraid to surrender because they had been told that to do so would mean death.
PW states that he saw surrender leaflets in mid Aug 50 and though he wanted to surrender, he was unable to do so because during that period, the officers and NCOs were still certain of victory and were always on the alert.

Personalities:
Name: O Paek Yong (吳白龍) (오백용) Maj Gen, 40, CO 8th Div.
Name: CHO Yong Bong (趙鎔奉) (조용봉) Col, 27, CO Div Arty.
Name: PAK Yang Son (朴陽善) (박양선) Capt, 25, CO Sv Co.

Intentions:
PW heard that the Div Arty Regt, minus all of the principal unit commanders, was left to cover the retreat of the 8th Div. The Regt was placed under the command of the CO, 2nd Bn. PW has not heard where the division was to withdraw to except that it was to pass through YONGJU.

Communications:
PW saw the communications equipment of the Div Sig Bn along the road 8 km N of ANDONG and assumed that the equipment was discarded during the retreat.

Equipment:
Trucks: Div Arty Regt was forced to abandon its vehicles on 24 Sep 50, due to the lack of fuel. On that date, the regt had 6 trucks.
Guns: Div Arty Regt was forced to abandon all of its pieces because of the lack of transportation,
