2. ASSESSMENT:
PW stated that he, together with his brother, escaped from the NKPA draft on two occasions by leaving home but was finally caught the third time. He stated that he was not a member of any political party.
PW seemed to have no interest in present war and was not observant. Further interrogation not recommended.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
7 Aug 50 - Inducted in NKPA at HOERYONG (會寧). Departed by train with approx 1,000 recruits.
8 Aug 50 - Arrived NANAM (羅南). Assigned to 568 Unit 4th Bn, Signal Plt. Received 15 days training including 2 days training with Signal Plt.
26 Aug 50 - Departed NANAM by train with 1,000 men.
7 Sep 50 - Arrived SEOUL.
8 Sep 50 - Departed YONGDUNGP’O (永登浦) by train.
10 Sep 50 - Arrived YONGDONG (永同). Departed same night on foot with 700 men.
19 Sep 50 - Arrived at point 8 km NE of HYOPCH’ON (陜川), via KUMCH’ON (金泉) and SONGJU (星州) with 500 men. Assigned to 9th Div, 1st Regt, 1st Bn, 2nd Co, 3rd Plt. Departed same night on foot with 1st Bn (approx 500 men).
21 Sep 50 - Arrived at a hill located 10 km SE of KUMCH’ON. PW and 500 replacements of the 1st Bn, for the first time, on 23 Sep 50, received new PPsh M1941 SMGs and 140 rounds of ammunition. Also received one F-1 defensive hand grenade each.
24 Sep 50 - PW and three other NKPA soldiers including Sqd Ldr, after throwing away their SMGs, surrendered to US Forces. PW stated that they, the 4 men who surrendered, wanted to join the UN Forces in fighting the NKPA but instead were taken as PsW.

Organization and Strength:
As of 19 Sep 50, the 1st Bn (approx 500 men) consisted of replacements expect for 10 original men. The 500 replacements were organized into the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Cos.

Equipment:
All members of the 1st Bn were issued new PPsh M1941 SMGs. They received two magazines each of the drum or box type.

Unit History:
PW heard that four (4) Bns of the 9th Div were annihilated in a battle E of the NAKTONG River near HYOPCH’ON (陜川).

Disposition:
PW heard that the 9th Div CP was located in KUMCH’ON (金泉) on 21 Sep 50.

Communication:
The RR from YONGDUNGP’O to YONGDONG was open as of 19 Sep 50. All bridges were repaired and usable.

Morale and Propaganda:
Morale of troops was quite low due to lack of rations and equipment. Enroute to KUMCH’ON (金泉) from NANAM (羅南), an average of 3 men deserted each night. As the NKPA was forced to retreat to the north, the morale of troops became lower.
PW observed no UN propaganda leaflets. NKPA propaganda were as follows:
1. Japanese are fighting for ROK.
2. Five CCF Divs are to join the NKPA Forces in the near future.
3. The duty of the North Koreans is to liberate all KOREA from the American invaders.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:
1. War material such as gasoline, trucks, artillery pieces, artillery shells, were brought to North KOREA from the USSR. The material was transported to CH’ONGJIN (淸津) by water in Russian ships and from CH’ONGJIN by rail to P’YONGYANG, NANAM, HAMHUNG and WONSAN Areas.
PW lived at HOERYONG (會寧) and stated that approx 15 box or flat cars pulled by two locomotives went through the town each night during the period 25 Jun 50 to 6 Aug 50.
Damage caused by US aircraft bombardment:
1. CHONGJIN: The SE portion of town was totally destroyed. The steel plant (former NITTETSU (日鉄) and textile plant (PANGJIK Plant (방직) located S of CH’ONGJIN and E of the RR line, were also totally destroyed.
2. HUNGNAM: A chemical plant located E of town was totally destroyed. The RR Facilities were heavily damaged.
3. KUMCH’ON: Town totally destroyed.
4. YONGDONG: Town totally destroyed.
PW heard the PPsh M1941 SMGs were produced at P’YONGYANG.
PW observed from 800 to 1000 NK air force personnel arrive at HOERYONG (會寧) 4 Aug 50. Personnel arrived in trucks and were stationed in Govt office building and schools. No aircraft observed.
