ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1601　3 October 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0949)　29 September 1950

PW surrendered to US Forces. Spoke freely but his knowledge of military information was very limited.

Not recommended for further interrogation.

21 Oct 49 - Inducted into the Security Guard Unit at P’YONGYANG and received a month and a half of basic infanty training.

D/u Feb 50 - PW and six (6) men departed P’YONGYANG by train. Arrived at KOSONG and was stationed here for 6 months as a Security Guard.

21 Jul 50 - PW and group of three (3) men departed KOSONG by truck.

23 Jul 50 - Arrived in SEOUL and was given rank of Jr Lt (少尉). He was then assigned to the 3rd Co, 14th Bn, 104th Regt, Security Force.

1 Aug 50 - The 14th Bn, 104th Regt departed SEOUL on foot.

3 Aug 50 - Arrived in SUWON and immediately departed on a troop train.

5 Aug 50 - Approximately 700 men of the 14th Bn, 104th Regt arrived at CH'ONAN and they immediately departed on foot.

? Aug 50 - Arrived at HYOPCH’ON via TAEJON. They were attacked by aircraft several times enroute from CH’ONAN, but no casualties were inflicted.

? Aug 50 - The 14th Bn left HYOPCH’ON. Arrived at KOSONG via CHINJU and SACH’ON, ? Sep 50. They were attacked by aircraft 3 times and approximately 15 casualties were sustained. In KOSUNG, PW heard that the 104th Regt was deployed in the immediate area. The 14th Bn was ordered to patrol the coastal regions of KOSONG.

21 Sep 50 - At 2200 hrs, the 14th Bn received orders to withdraw to CHINJU.

22 Sep 50 - Enroute to CHINJU, they encountered US tank force at SACH’ON and the 14th Bn became disorganized. PW lost contact with his platoon and fled to KAEYANG (開陽) alone.

23 Sep 50 - Hid in the mountain till daybreak and then surrendered to US Forces.

The 14th Bn, 104th Regt was equipped with 2 × 45 mm AT Guns, 3 × HMGs, and 2 × IMGs. One half of the troops were armed with US M-1 rifles and Model 38 Japanese rifles. Soldiers equipped with US M-1 rifles had approximately 40 rounds of ammunition, but there was no ammunition for the Japanese rifles. Only 50 round were available for the 45mm AT Guns.

Original Organization and StrengthL The 14th Bn of the 104th Regt was composed for three (3) infantry companies and a HMG company. The total strength was 700 men (as of 1 Aug).

The 104th Regt, Security Force, was organized in SEOUL during Jul 50 as a Security Guard Unit. Further details, unknown.

PW heard that the 104th Regt CP was located in MYONGJIRI (명지리), 12km N of CHINJU, when they were ordered to withdraw from KOSONG (as of 21 Sep 50).

Roads: Damaged by constant bombing and only a small percentage of the damage was repaired.

Bridge: All large bridges were damaged and none were repaired. Sand-filled straw bags were laid on the river bottoms to make fords.

Telephones: The 14th Bn, 104th Regt was equipped with eight (8) standard wall-type telephones.

PW heared that the 14th Bn was ordered to assemble at MYONGJIRI, 12km N of CHINJU, before dawn of 22 Sep 50.

Enroute from SEOUL to CHINJU, only 5 men deserted from the 14th Bn, 104th Regt, Security Force.

PW saw a US propaganda leaflet once at KOSONG and he showed it to the rest of the men in his platoon. He believes that it was effective in changing the idea of not surrendering to the UN Forces.
