FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 0961)　25 September 1950

Information reliable.

The 13th Div Hq on 19 Sep 50, retreated to SAlGJU. Only the Division commander and his staff were able to retreat.

The 19th, 21st and 23rd Regts dispersed in confusion. Troops who were able to withdraw, retreated to SANGJU.

Small pockets (elements of 21st and 23rd Regts) are holding out in the mountains 2 Kms South of TABUDONG at TONGMYONG MYON.

The troops of the 19th Ragt who were not able to retreat are holding out in disorganized groups in the mountains 2½ Kms Southeast of TABUDONG; near KASAN.

The artillery Regt was annihilated.

Inducted 20 March 47, at NANAM with 700 others and assigned to 2nd Div, 6th Regt, 3rd Bn, HMG Co, for training purposes.

Between May 47, to Feb 50, the PW was a machine gunner. In Feb 50, he was transferred to the 13th Division (newly activated) and commissioned a 2nd Lt.

Between Feb 50, to 15 June 50, the PW was a HMG training officer for the 19th Regt, 2nd Bn.

On 16 June 50, the 13th Division moved by rail to PYONGYANG in preparation for war. Arrived TABUDONG 28 Aug 50.

Between 28 Aug and 20 Sop 50, the PW was in the mountains 2 Km Southeast of TABUDONG, near KASAN.

On 20 Sep 50, the PW deserted his unit and made his way to American lines to surrender.

Between June 50 and 30 Aug 50, the 13th Division received about 2,000 replacements. The replacements were mostly South Koreans conscripted in SEOUL area.

The replacements received little or no training upon arrival. They were issued weapons only when available.

The replacements do not have the will to fight. They are usually under the command of North Koreans, who watch them very carefully to prevent desertions.

A large percentage of the replacements deserted upon arrival at the front lines.

The 1st and 8th North Korean Divisions were on the left flank of the 13th Division until 17 Sep 50. On 17 Sep 50, the PW was told by his division commander that the 1st and 8th Divisions would withdraw to SANGJU, regroup, retreat to the west coast where they will attempt to escape by water to North Korea, by way of DAIREN.

The 15th and 3rd Divisions were on the right flank of the 13th Division. The PW beard that the 15th Division was destroyed.
