ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative. Information about present strength limited because PW’s unit was thrown into utter confusion 24 Sep 50. Information about activities prior to that date seems to be reliable.

8th Div, 1st Regt composed of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Rifle Bns, Arty Bn, Reconnaissance Co, SMG Co, Signal Co, and Medical Co.
2nd Rifle Bn composed of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Rifle Cos, HMG Co, Medical Platoon, Supply Plat, 45mm Arty Plat (no longer has any arty pieces), AT Plat, Signal Plat and a Mortar Co.

PERSONAL and UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted on 2 Feb 48, at CHUNGHWA GUN, into the Police Constabulary, Internal Affairs Office.
Departed from CHUNGHWA GUN on 30 Aug 48, for CHINNAMPO where PW trained as rifleman for 3 weeks.
Departed from CHINNAMPO on 24 Sep 48 with the entire CHINNAMPO Police Constabulary Brigade, and arrived at KYONGWON GUN on the TUMEN River on 29 Sep 48. Guarded the Korean-Manchurian Border there for 1 month.
With 45 other Police Constabularymen arrived at YANGYANG on 13 Dec 48. Assigned to the 38th Parallel Border Guard Brigade.
Transferred to 38th Parallel Border Guard, 1st Bn, 82mm Mortar Co, at CHORWON on 27 March 49 and sent to YONCHON
On 2 July 50, marched with the entire 1st Bn of the 38th Border Guard Brigade and arrived at KANGNUNG o/a 9 Jul 50, whereupon the 1st Bn was incorporated into the 8th Div, 1st Regt, and redesignated as the 2nd Bn.
Arrived vicinity of UISONG 20 Aug 50
Because of heavy casualties PW was given a battlefield commission on 6 Sep 50. He was assigned as Plat Ldr of the 3rd Plat.
On 24 Sep 50, PW lost control of his platoon, and bis company CO fled. PW surrendered to attacking ROK Army units at 240900 K Sep 50

REPLACEMENTS:
Received 16 conscripted South Korean raplacements from SEOUL for the Mortar Co on 1 Sep 50.

FOOD and AMMO SUPPLIES:
Received an average of 1 bowl of barley or rice mush every 2 days, after 20 Aug 50.
Observed two (2) empty 2½ ton trucks approx 2 Km South of UISONG (on UISONG-YONGCHON road) o/a 3 Sep 50.

ARMOR and ARTILLERY:
Observed 7 x T-34 tanks approx 2 km South of UISONG on the UISONG-YONGCHON road o/a 3 Sep 50. PW also observed 4 x 45mm guns and 3 x 122mm howitzers at the same time.

MORALE:
Personnel in the Mortar Co were sick of combat and were hungry. Were they not told by their “Cultural Officers” that the ROK and US soldiers cut PW's cars and noses off, they would have all surrendered immediately.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
When PW surrendered, he was holding a Safe Conduct Pass which he picked up o/a 18 Sep 50. He learned from a UN leaflet the same day that UN forces had occupied INCHON and KIMPO Airfield. He learned from previous leaflets how many UN nations opposed NKPA aggression.
