ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1564　2 October 1950

FIELD REPORT (521 - MISD - 0096)　29 September 1950

Informant was very cooperative and talkative. Information seems reliable. He was a deserter and was captured in a group of three wearing civilian clothes.

Physical condition　　Good

Inducted on 2 Aug 50 at P'YONGYANG with about 1,000 recruits. Left HAEJU on 27 Aug 50 and arrived SARIWON on 28 Aug 50 by train. From SARIWON PW walked at night on the primary highway, which was undamaged, to P'YONGYANG (at this time RR was unserviceable). Road bridges which were 20m or over were all destroyed by air raids.

On the night of 2 Sep 50, 1,000 recruits departed P’YONGYANG by traine for SARIWON (RR had been repaired). From SARIWON they walked to CHON GE (3 stations E of SARIWON). The roea was primary one but bridges were knocked out by UN planes. From CHON GE the group traveled by train for 1½ days to KAESONG.

Walked from KAESONG to SEOUL. Road was untouched but bridges were bombed. Arrived SEOUL on 7 Sep 50. At SEOUL 230 officers were picked from the 1,000 men for three new regts, the 109th, 110th and 111th.

Due to lack of officers, 111th Regt, however, was not organized. The 109th Regt consisted of 38th, 39th and 40th Bns. 110th Regt of the 41st, 42nd and 43rd Bns. The 109th Regt was to be organized at TAEJON and the 110th Regt at KOCH'ANG.

When UN Forces landed at INCHON this plan was cancelled.

On 20 Sep 50, 48 officers retreated with front line HQ Staff to TONGDUCHON. The other 182 officers were assigned to unknown units in YONGDONGPO and SEOUL.

Total number of men in TONGDUCHON was estimated to be about 10,000. On 21 Sep 50 30 officers departed TONGDUCHON for UIJONGBU by foot to join the 2,000 troops there.

On 22 Sep 50 30 officers departed UIJONGBU and arrived SEOUL on 23 Sep 50. (18 officers stayed at UIJONGBU due to illness). The officers were detailed to supply the troops with rice.

On the morning of 24 Sep 50 subject, 4 officers and 30 EM deserted when they realized that the defenses of SEOUL were crumbling.

At HAEJU on 26 Aug 50 subject observed 14 or 15 Russian officers. Highest ranking of which was a Major. On 25 Sep 50 he observed a Russian Lt Col at P’YONGYANG and he thinks there are over a hundred Russian officers in that city.

A large food supply center for HAN HE DO area is located at SARIWON. On 13 and 26 Aug 50 1/3 of this center was destroyed by air raids.

At ONGJIN and CHANGYON there are believed to be Naval Marine Units for purpose of coastal defense. Strength unknown.

According to subject's opinion, the North Korean Army will continue to fight beyond the 38th parallel. He also thinks 70% of North Korean people will welcome the forces of United Nations, should they cross the 38th parallel.
