ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be of average intelligence. He was cooperative. Reliability is fair. Captured in uniform.
Physical condition: Fair
Length of service: 1 month

MILITARY HISTORY:
Inducted at P’YONGYANG on 20 Aug 50. Attached to training camp at P'YONGYANG and received basic training for 25 days.
PW was transferred to 23rd Div, 15th Regt, 1st Bn at P'YONGYANG on 20 Sep 50.

MOVEMENT OF UNIT:
Only the 15th Regt left P'YONGYANG on 21 Sep 50 and arrived SEOUL on 23 Sep 50. The remainder of the 23rd Div remained at P'YONGYANG.
1st, 2nd and 3rd Bn of the 15 Regt advanced to INCHON on 25 Sep 50 for battle, and only the Regt HQ Co was left behind in SEOUL, however due to severe pounding by artillery, Regt HQ retreated to the east.

ORGANIZATION OF UNIT:
23rd Div was organized at P'YONGYANG on or about 17 Sep 50 and was composed of 3 regts. (13th, 14th and 15th Regt)
1st Bn was mainly equipped with rifles. 2nd Bn was mainly equipped with HMG and AAHGe 1 and 3rd Bn was an artillery bn.

STRENGTH OF UNIT:
Strength was approx 7,000. PW believes that strength of 15 Regt was approx 2,500, and that of 13th and 14th Regts was only 2,200.

CIRCUMSTANCE OF CAPTURE:
PW surrendered to 17 TOK Regt at KYONGSONG on 26 Sep 50.

WEAPONS:
PW observed 5 artillery guns, 180 HMGs, 3 AAMGs, 800 automatic rifles and 1,500 rifles in 15th Regt.
70 rds of rifle ammunition were issued per man.

MORALE:
Morale was low, and majority of troops wanted to desert. Food --- 1 to 2 meals a day. 1 rice ball per meal.

US PWs:
PW observed approx 170 American PWs receiving lectures on Communism from Russian officers at US PW prison. A former agricultural school was utilized as a PW camp. This was a two story concrete building with slate roof, located at SU P'YONGYANG (西平壤) in P'YONGYANG.
All PWs appeared to be healthy and well fed. PW heard that US PWs were fed better than North Koreans.
All PWs were wearing OD jackets and had neckties on.
They were shipped here from TAEJON area.
This observation was made on 3 Sep 50.
