3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
8 Aug 50: An estimated 700 conscripts, including PW, assembled at NANAM and were issued NKPA uniforms. Departed immediately without training or arms.
24 Aug 50: 700 (a NKPA Lt in charge of group) departed NANAM by rail. Detrained at a point just south of the 38° parallel. Due to an interruption of RR lines, marched via HUNGNAM (興南), WONSAN (元山), CH‘ORWON (鐵元) for about 12 km, then entrained again and arrived SEOUL.
o/a 9 Sep 50: Marched through SEOUL and arrived YONGDUNGP’O. Crossed HAN River on wooden boats, capacity 50.
o/a 11 Sep 50: Departed YONGDUNGP’O (永登浦) by rail.
o/a 13 Sep 50: Detrained at OKCH’ON (沃川). Marched out of OKCH’ON same day.
24 Sep 50: 700 arrived TAEYARI via KUMCH’ON, KUMI (龜尾) and KORYONG (高靈).
25 Sep 50: 700 dispersed into the mountain after being warned by retreating NKPA troops of the approach of US forces. PW remained in hiding all day, came out at dusk, surrendering to rear elements of the US 38th Inf. PW learned after capture, that an estimated 300 out of his group had been captured. Remainder (400) probably escaped.

Intentions:
The 700 were to be assigned to NKPA units as replacements upon reaching a field headquarters reportedly located at KUMI (龜尾) midway between KUMCH’ON and WAEGWAN (倭館). Upon reaching KUMI, however, they were told that the headquarters had moved to KOCH’ANG (居昌).

Food:
PW's group, during its movement in S. KOREA, subsisted off the villagers, acquiring rice, oxen and vegetables by force.
