2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was formerly a ROK soldier. Was intelligent and very cooperative. All answers were given without hesitation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Brief Account of how ROK soldiers were taken to North KOREA.
PW was in CHUNCH’ON until 5 May 49. Approximately 5 0500 May 49, the Regtl commander’s order was to go on maneuvers near 38° Parallel. 1st Bn (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Cos) 8th Regt were to participate in the maneuver. Bn CO Major P’YO Mu Un (表무언) ordered the unit to cross the 38° Parallel and enter North KOREA. When the troops crossed the 38° Parallel the North Korean soldiers were there to take the 300 men to ANJU (安州) where they were drafted into the NKPA. When the 2nd and 3rd Cos discovered that they were being taken to North KOREA above the 38° Parallel under false pretenses, their respective officers guided them back to South KOREA.
In ANJU, 12 Jul 49, 300 ROK soldiers were assigned to NKPA, 19th Ind Bn. Departed ANJU - 15 Jul 49 - arrived HOERYONG (會寧) 18 Jul 49. Guard duty along the MANCHURIA-KOREA Border. 300 men were under the command of Lt Col P'YO, Mu On, formerly a Major in the ROK Army. The men shared barracks with the No. 3 OCS in HOERYONG. When not on duty as border guards, thay were given dismounted drill and combat tactics.
15 Jun 50 - departed HOERYONG - arrived MANP'OCHIN (滿浦鎭) 19 Jun 50. 19th Ind Bn, NKPA with 300 men performed border guard duty. Lt Col P'YO, Mu On was still in command. Remained here for 2 works.
2 Jul 50 - Departed MANP'OCHIN - arrived P'YONGYANG - 4 Jul 50. Upon arrived the 19th Ind Bn joined with a unit of 300 men commanded by Lt Col KANG, Tae Mu (姜태무), formerly a Major in the ROK Army who deserted on 5 May 49. The two units reorganized.
6 Jul 50 - Departed P'YONGYANG - arrived CH'ORWON (鐵原) 8 Jul 50.
8 Jul 50 - Departed CH'ORWON - arrived KUMHWA (金化) same day, via street car.
8 Jul 50 - Departed KUMHWA - arrived CH’UNCH’ON (春川) 10 Jul 50. 300 fresh conscripts ware brought from SEOUL and added to the 300 men of 19th Ind Bn and formed the 101st Ind Regt. Lt Col P'YO, Mu On was promoted to Col whan he took command. 300 conscripts were given rifles. 101st Ind Regt composed of 7th, 10th, 11th, and 19th Bns. The 7th Bn had 360 men. 10th, 11th, and 19th Bns had approx 80 men per Bn.
20 Jul 50 - Departed CH’UNCH’ON - arrived WONJU (原州) 22 Jul 50. Only the 7th Bn arrived and the 10th Bn, 11th Bn, and 19th Bn moved to unknown area with the Regtl CO, Col P’YO, Mu On.
20 men of 7th Bn suffered from malaria and dysentery. They were left where they fall and it was up to the individual to find madical treatment.
22 Jul 50 - Performed guard and control duty in a village 8 km W of WONJU. Total strength, 340 men.
29 Jul 50 - Departed WONJU - arrived CHECH'ON (堤川) 31 Jul 50. 1st Co guarded and patrolled a village 16 Km W of CHECH'ON. 2nd Co and 3rd Co performed guard duty E of CHECH’ON. Message was received via runner 10 Aug 50, for general assembly. Here they were ordered to advance to the south. In CHECH'ON troops located a rice mill where large quantities of rice was stored. 4,000 lbs were put on truck for regtl use and the rest was given to the civilians of the city.
10 Aug 50 - Departed CHECH’ON (堤川), arrived TANYANG (丹陽) 12 Aug 50. 12 Km NE of TANYANG while attempting to cross the HAN River, (漢江) they were attacked by US aircraft. Partially repaired bridge was impassable so pontoon bridge was built and one company crossed at a time. Crossing was completed in 3 hours. In TANYANG, the 7th Bn performed patrol duties.
15 Aug 50 - Departed TANYANG, arrived CHUNGNYONG (竹嶺) 15 Aug 50. 7th Bn did guard duty around supply warehouses. All the supply vehicles were hid in the caves and hills during the day and utilized only during the night because of US aerial activities.
1 Sep 50 - Departed CHUNGNYONG, arrived YONGJU.
4 Sep 50 - Departed YONGJU, arrived OCH’ONDONG (梧川洞) 12 Sep 50. Performed guard duties.
18 Sep 50 - Departed OCH'ONDONG, arrived YONGDOK (盈德) 18 Sep 50. In YONGDOK, the Hq for 7th Bn was organized. Guarded coast at KANGGU. PW was assigned to 3rd Sqd, 2nd Plt, 1st Co, 7th Bn, 101st Ind Regt.
25 Sep 50 - From CHANGSADONG (長沙洞) Area the ROK soldiers launched a sudden attack and took PsW and killed 104 from 1st Co, PW was captured in this engagement.

Unit Duties:
The 101st Ind Regt was to maintain the security of occupied area.

Communication:
Between battalion and company, telephones were used and from platoon to company, runners were used. All messages were in code.

Troops of Other Nationalities:
O/a 10 Feb 50, a Russian Inf Maj inspected the No 3 OCS in HOERYONG.

Psychological Factors:
The most feared weapons the PW experienced were MG's and P-80 aircraft.
If permitted to do so, 75 to 80% of the soldiers of NKPA would surrender.
