PW appeared to be fairly intelligent. He was cooperative, however, in several instances he made general statements without qualification. PW considered fairly reliable by interrogator.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
24 Jul 50 - Conscripted into NKPA at WONSAN. Assigned to 76th Ind (Inf) Regt, 3rd Bn.
29 Jul 50 - Conscripts interviewed by military representative, NKPA 2nd OCS, P'YONGYANG (平壤), at WONSAN. PW and 19 conscripts selected; left WONSAN by rail.
30 Jul 50 - PW's enrolled in class of 80 at 2nd OCS, P’YONGYANG (See NKPA 2nd OCS).
24 Aug 50 - PW graduated. Commissioned Lt (中尉). Left P'YONGYANG with group of 75 commissioned graduates, by rail and foot.
31 Aug 50 - PW's group arrived at SEOUL via SARIWON (沙里院), SINMAK (新幕), KUMCH’ON (金泉).
1 Sep 50 - 25 officers remained in SEOUL. 50 officers, including PW, ordered to report to II Corps Hq, UISONG (義城) PW‘s group (50) left SEOUL, by truck, same day.
6 Sep 50 - PW's group arrived at II Corps Hq, UISONG, via ICH’ON (利川), YOJU (驪州), CH'UNGJU (忠州), TANYANG (丹陽), YONGJU (榮州), ANDONG (安東). At UISONG, officers were sent to 7th and 8th Div's, AN’GANG-Ni (安康里) Area and 12th and 15th Div's, YONGCH’ON (永川)-T'AEGU (大邱) Area. PW and 3 officers assigned to 5th Div. Ordered to report to 5th Div Hqs, KIGYE (杞溪) Area. PW and 3 others left UISONG on foot the same day.
8 Sep 50 - PW's party arrived 5th Div Hq, NAEGSU-DONG (See 5th Div Unit disposition). PW and 3 others assigned as Political officers, Div arty Bn Batteries (PW assigned to 4th AT Rifle Co, WOLP’O-Ri (See 5th Div Unit Disposition).
O/a 14 Sep 50 - ROK Army raiding unit landed near CH’ONGHA (淸河).
16 Sep 50 - 20 troops from PW’s unit, 4th AT Rifle Co, dispatched into CH’ONGHA Area. Did not return.
22 Sep 50 - 4th AT Rifle Co deployed in level area immediately W of WOLP'O-Ri. PW hid in fox-hole along highway on southern outskirts of WOLP'O-Ri.
23 Sep 50 - PW captured in fox-hole by attacking ROK army units.

Remarks: Usually teams of 3 to 4 observers assigned from Bn to single Arty Guns. Liaison by wire.

5th Div Unit Dispositions (20 Sep 50):
Div Hq - located within NAENGSU-DONG (泠水洞), 4 km SSW of T'OSONG-DONG (土城洞) (1220-1472) on KIGYE-CH’ONGHAE (靑海) Highway.
Three (3) Inf Regts - Deployed abreast along coastal hills overlooking WOLP'O-Ri (月浦里) (18 km N of P'OHANG-DONG (浦項洞) to YONGDOK (盈德) Coastal highway.
Div Arty Bn Hq - Located within 5 km N of T'OSONG-DONG on KIGYE-CH’ONGHAE Highway.
Remarks: Hq to evacuate to CH'ONGHAE 22 Sep 50 (Hearsay from PW’s CO, 19 Sep 50).
1st Btry - located in YONGDOK.
2nd Btry - Located in CHANGSA-DONG, 19 km S of YONGDOK on coastal highway.
3rd Btry - Located in hills immediately W of WOLP’O-Ri in Div infantry unit area.
4th AT Rifle Co - Deployed in level area between 3rd Btry and WOLP’O-Ri.
NKPA Units:
3 Sep 50 - In CH’UNGJU, Garrison unit; strength 500 (NKPA and Security troops) armed with SMGs, LMGs, believed stationed within city.
4 Sep 50 - In YONGJU, 500 NKPA and Security troops believed stationed. Armed with SMGs, LMGs.
5 Sep 50 - In ANDONG, 500 NKPA and Security troops believed stationed. Armed with SMGs, LMGs.
Armor:
In ICH’ON, 5 x T-34/85 Medium tanks (fairly new condition) observed travelling over highway south.
Hq Location:
NKPA Field. GHQ - Located in one of many brick building situated within CHANG KY’ONGWON (昌慶苑), SEOUL. Last observed, 1 Sep 50.
II Corps Hq - Located under UISONG-KUNWI (軍威) Highway river bridge at paint 5 km SW of UISONG. Last observed 6 Sep 50. PW believes II Corps composed of following NKPA Divs: 5th Div, 7th Div, 8th Div, 12th Div, 13th (?) Div, 15th Div.
NKPA 2nd OCS (30 Jul - 24 Aug 50):
Established sometime in 48, P’YONGYANG, 2nd OCS was headed by a NKPA Sr Col (總佐) and staffed by 100 military instructors, including 30 (highest ranking officer in group, Col (大佐) Chinese Communists from Communist CHINA. School Commandant was assisted by two (2) Soviet Military Advisors (1 Col and 1 Capt - Soviet Army Rank) from USSR.
1,100 military students (80% new conscripts) received 12 to 13 hours classroom instruction each day due to accelerated course. Courses were conducted on military tactics (mountain fighting in conjunction with night. combat tactics) and military leadership. Classes were conducted usually in groups of 50 in classrooms and in surrounding wooded areas for practical application of training instructions. Average educational level of trainees was Primary School.
Infantry Course lasted from 15 to 30 days depending on individual's progress. Trainees unable to satisfactorily complete course within 30 days were sent through same course from appropriate level in lower units.
2nd OCS was located in largest building (3-story brick) within P’YONGYANG MANGGYONGDAE (平壤 望鏡台) on P’YONGYANG-SINANJU (新安州) Highway 4 km N of P’YONGYANG.
