2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative, but not very intelligent. Tactical information was not available His information seemed fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
10 Dec 46: PW was inducted at KANGGYE (江界). Assigned to 82mm Mortars Co, 2nd Bn, 3rd Detachment (equivalent to Regt), Security Forces No 1 Training Center. There were approx 1,000 men in the 3rd Detachment. Troops received military training for approx 6 months. Training consisted of military regulations, close order drill, Sqd, Plt, co and Bn tactics, political training, etc. PW estimated that only 30% of the 3rd Detachment were issued weapons.
18 May 47: Completed training.
19 May 47: Approx 500 men were promoted to Jr Sgts (下士) and Sgt (中士). PW was promoted to Sgt. Approx 1,500 recruits were assigned to the 3rd Detachment. PW was assigned to the 82mm Mortar Co, 3rd Bn.
Jun 47: New Soviet weapons arrived. PW estimated that 80% of the troops were issued weapons.
Dec 47: PW was promoted to M/Sgt. (特務上士).
8 Feb 48: The 3rd Detachment, Security Force No 1 Training Center was redesignated 3rd Regt, 1st Div.
o/a 20 Oct 48: The 3rd Regt moved to NAMCH’ONJOM (南川店). PW trained recruits until 11 Feb 50.
11 Feb 50: PW and 3 others (M/Sgts) departed NAMCH’ONJOM by train for P’YONGYANG for discharge due to poor health.
12 Feb 50: They reached P’YONGYANG and reported to the Personnel Section of the Defense Ministry (保衛省陕別保元部) Approx 100 men who reported to the Personnel Section were ordered to go to SINUIJU (新義州). Since the 100 men were all in bad health, everyone thought that they were going to a rest camp in SINUIJU.
19 Feb 50: The 100 men reported to the 6th Div Hqs in SINUIJU. They were temporarily assigned to the Training Bn, 6th Div. Here, they rested for a week.
26 Feb 50: Maj Gen LEE Ik Song (李t益成) interviewed the 100 men (later CG of 13th Div). They ware told by the Gen that they could not be discharged because they ware needed as a cadre in the new Youth Training Center which was to be opened in SINUIJU. Approx 25 men including PW were sent to the newly opened Training Center in SINUIJU. Approx 260 men (officers and cadre) prepared to train the recruits. ----
31 Mar 50: Approx 1,800 conscripts arrived in this Training Center.
1 Apr 50: The training started and W was assigned to Training Center Hqs. PW worked in the Hqs as a railroad ticket agent.
o/a 10 Jun 50: PW heard for the first time that this Training Center was designated 19th Regt, 13th Div.
18 Jun 50: The 13th Div (19th Regt, SINUIJU; 21st Regt, YONGANP’O (龍巖浦); 23rd Regt, South SINUIJU; Arty Regt, SINUIJU) departed S by train.
18 Jun 50: The 19th Regt arrived KUMCH'ON (金川) and departed (marched) for YONCH’ON (連川).
24 Jun 50: The 19th Regt joined the other Regts of the 13th Div at a point 8 km W of YONCH’ON.
27 Jun 50: The 13th Div crossed the 38° parallel.
2 Jul 50: The 13th Div entered SEOUL. The 23rd Regt departed for INCH’ON (仁川). Remaining Regts of the 13th Div departed southward o/a 11 Jul 50.
? Jul 50: Th3 13th Div reached CH'UNGJU (忠州) via SUWON (水原). Departed here same day.
o/a 5 Aug 50: The 13th Div crossed the NAKTONG River (somewhere near NAKTONG-NI (洛東里) via HAMCH'ANG (咸昌) and SANGJU (尙州). The 13th Div fought for the first time since they departed N. KOREA (the 3rd Bn of 21st Regt was annihilated in this battle). The 23rd Regt also crossed the NAKTONG River later.
o/a 12 Aug 50: The 13th Div reached a point approx 1½ km S of HAJANG DONG (下場洞). Between NAKTONG-NI (洛東里) and HAJANG-DONG the 13th Div engaged in three major battles. PW estimated that the 19th Regt suffered approx 600 casualties. The 13th Div fought between HAJANG-DONG and TABU-DONG (多富洞) until 2 Sep 50. The 19th Regt suffered many casualties but received approx 500 replacements by 1 Sep 50.
3 Sep 50: PW was commissioned Lt (中尉) and was assigned to the 45mm AT Gun Co as political officer.
o/a 3 Sep 50: The 19th Regt advanced to TABU-DONG. The 21st and the 23rd Regts were also in this vicinity but PW did not know the exact locations.
o/a 6 Sep 50: All the artillery pieces (120mm Howitzers, 76mm Mountain guns, 76mm AT guns and 45mm AT guns) of the 13th Div were in position along the hills located approx 2 km S of TABU-DONG. All the infantry troops had already advanced further S at this time. PW's Co (45mm AT Co) was attached to the 45mm AT Gun Bn which was directly under the 13th Div. All the artillery units waited 2 km S of TABU-DONG until 22 Sep 50.
22 Sep 50: The US troops attacked and the troops abandoned their artillery pieces and retreated to the N. PW was separated from his unit.
24 Sep 50: PW surrendered to ROK police 800 m S of TABU-DONG.


Last known composition of unit:
PW estimated that the 45mm AT Gun Bn abandoned about 20 x 45mm AT guns 2 km S of TABU-DONG when they retreated 22 Sep 50. PW believes that most of the other artillery pieces were also abandoned.

Location of 13th Div Hqs:
The 13th Div Hqs was located in a village located approx 2 km N of TABU-DONG (as of 22 Sep 50).

Morale and Propaganda:
Morale of the troops was very low due to shortage of food and heavy casualties. PW believes that the surrender leaflets would be very effective for the NK troops because their morale is vary low.
